In the latest Hunger Games novel, “Sunrise at the Reaping,” Lucy Gray Baird is explicitly mentioned, yet she’s not the sole character linked to “A Songbirds and Snakes Ballad.
Among all the tales, Songbirds & Snakes marks our latest exploration into the world of The Hunger Games novels and films, until now. This story unfolds during the Second Quarter Quell, focusing on Haymitch Abernathy, a character familiar to us as Katniss Everdeen’s mentor, who emerges victorious in the 50th Hunger Games.
The book is now available for purchase, and a film version based on it is scheduled for release in 2026. Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted several connections to the second book of the original trilogy, “Catching Fire,” most notably in the characters chosen to mentor the 50th games.
As I delved back into the world of Sunrise on the Reaping, I found myself reacquainted with none other than President Snow โ and it wasn’t just Lucy Gray Baird who had returned from the prequel A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes!
Tam Amber is seen both in Sunrise on the Reaping and A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes
In case you’re unfamiliar with the young man depicted below, there’s no need to feel guilty about it. The character named Tam Amber from District 12 was introduced in “A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” and now he has reappeared in Sunrise during the Reaping.
Initially, Tam Amber belonged to a group called the Covey and distinguished himself as an exceptional mandolin player within it. Prior to the storyline of Songbirds & Snakes, he endured the Covey Genocide without participating during Lucy’s involvement in the 10th Hunger Games.
Later on, Tam remained as the only individual still awake once Lucy departed from the Meadow. It’s important to note that, according to the book and film, they never had a chance to meet again after this point.
Four decades on, and it’s a whole new world. I find myself taking on the role of an honorary uncle to Lenore Dove, who was once Haymitch’s ladylove. Raising her together with another familiar face from the Hunger Games era, Clerk Carmine Clade, we’ve created a unique bond. Yet, our relationship remains strictly familial, unofficially tinted with mutual respect and camaraderie.
Haymitch shares an insight in the book: “I had once jokingly suggested to Lenore Dove that [Clerk] disliked love. However, it was then that she confided in me about his long-term relationship with a man in town who repairs broken windows. They’ve been together for around thirty years, but they have to keep their relationship secret because expressing love differently can lead to harassment by the Peacekeepers, job losses, and even arrests.
Considering the hurdles he faces, one might expect Clerk Carmine to wholeheartedly endorse our relationship; however, I stand firmly behind his perspective… (continues)
Due to the Abernathy family’s standing as rule-breakers, Clerk disapproved of Lenore’s relationship with Haymitch, whereas Tam showed understanding towards the situation.
It’s widely recognized that Tam is an accomplished blacksmith, causing some spectators to speculate that they might have glimpsed him in the initial Hunger Games film as well.
In book one, it was clarified that Katniss obtained Prim’s goat, which was referred to as Lady. A reader elaborated this by stating that Katniss mentioned there is an elderly man residing beyond the Seam who maintains a small group of goats. This individual doesn’t have a known true name, and he’s generally recognized as the Goat Herder.
‘His joints are swollen and contorted into uncomfortable positions, and he’s plagued by a persistent, mine-induced cough. Yet, he considers himself fortunate. In the course of his life, he managed to accumulate some goats, which now provide him with a purpose other than enduring slow starvation in his later years. He may be grubby and short-tempered, but these animals remain clean and their milk is valuable, if you can afford it.’
Later in Songbirds, Coriolanus queries Lucy about who might be awaiting her return, to which Lucy replies, “Only Tam Amber was awake when I departed. I mentioned I was off to investigate a goat. We’ve been discussing starting a herd and selling the milk as an additional income source. It may seem trivial or far-fetched, but if you connect the dots, it seems plausible that the ‘goat man’ could be Tam Amber many years down the line.
This theory remains unproven so far, and it’s uncertain whether the character Tam Amber will be included in the film adaptation of Sunrise at the Harvest (however, given the nature of things, it seems highly probable).
