Steam Accounted for More Than Half of Monster Hunter Wilds’ Total Dollar Sales in the U.S.

Globally, Monster Hunter Wilds has been a massive success, selling an astounding 8 million copies within merely three days. In America, Capcom’s action game tops the sales charts for 2025 as the most popular game, and it’s the PC version that’s leading the pack.

Based on Circana’s report, it can be said that Monster Hunter Wilds was not just the top-selling game in February, but its opening-month revenue also surpassed the entire sales figure of Monster Hunter: Rise during its launch in March 2021 by more than double.

Unsurprisingly, Monster Hunter Wilds was the top-selling game in February across PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. However, what’s intriguing is that Steam contributed to over half of Monster Hunter Wilds’ total revenue. This is noteworthy given that the PC version faced certain technical difficulties, resulting in a ‘mixed’ user review rating for Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam.

Perhaps Monster Hunter Wilds’ PC success shouldn’t come as a surprise, given PC has become increasingly important for multiplatform releases. Speaking to iggn.ru in a recent interview, Strauss Zelnick, boss of Rockstar parent company Take-Two, said the PC version of a multiplatform game can generate 40% of overall sales, or even more with certain games.

The mentioned statistic was brought up during conversations about this console generation’s state. In the United States, the expenditure on video game hardware dropped by a substantial 25% from last year, reaching an amount of $256 million in February. This is the smallest total spending on video game hardware in February since the $184 million figure recorded back in February 2020.

Zelnick emphasized that the PC gaming platform is becoming more significant, as publishers are in a holding pattern, watching for Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming announcements. Meanwhile, the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 adds to the anticipation.

He noted that PCs are increasingly playing a larger role in what was once exclusively a console market, and he expects this pattern to persist. However, he also acknowledged that a new console generation is inevitable.

It appears that Monster Hunter Wilds is an example of a current trend. However, it wasn’t the only successful new release in February. In fact, as per Circana’s data, the top four best-selling games of February 2025 were all new releases. These included Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, and PGA Tour 2K25, alongside Monster Hunter Wilds. Other new releases that made it to the top 10 list for the month include Obsidian’s Avowed, which debuted on Game Pass on its release day, and Sega’s Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

In February 2025, the total dollar sales for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II in its first month surpassed five times the amount that the original game earned during its debut in February 2018. Embracer Group, which owns Warhorse Studios, the developers of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, has already celebrated the sequel’s sales achievement.
