Emerging Filipino actor, Anthony Jennings, has been cast as the main character for his debut international role in the upcoming movie “Mother Maybe,” a blend of horror, comedy, and drama. This exciting news comes from the Hong Kong FilMart, where it was announced that the project will be helmed by renowned filmmaker Sonny Calvento, who is best known for directing “Her Story.
In the latter part of this year, production will start on a unique film concept that combines various genres. The story centers around Marco (Jennings), who unexpectedly meets his long-lost mom amidst an intense Asian game show competition. However, their reunion takes an unsettling turn when Marco learns a chilling truth: at night, his mother undergoes a terrifying transformation into something otherworldly.
Calvento stated that Anthony has a captivating charisma that’s hard to look away from. He possesses the ability to switch between making you laugh and bringing tears to your eyes in an instant, which perfectly matches the requirements of this role. His knack for blending humor with depth makes him an ideal choice for the character of Marco.
The movie serves as a daring exploration of the life of an overseas Filipino worker, employing supernatural horror to delve into the psychological impact of migration. For Calvento, this venture holds profound significance. “My family does not conform to the typical tight-knit Filipino structure,” Calvento explained. “My mother left when I was just two years old, and discussing her was off-limits at home.” Essentially, this film is my heartfelt homage to my mother. A monster stands between us, yet maybe through this narrative, I can reconnect with her once more.
Actor Jennings, famously portraying Snoop Manansala in the popular series “Can’t Buy Me Love”, has established a diverse career spanning romance, drama, and action genres. His latest projects, “Incognito” and “Sosyal Climbers”, have been making waves on Netflix Philippines, with “Sosyal Climbers” even cracking the Global Top 10 for Non-English content on Netflix.
