Taiwanese production company Aview Images has teamed up once more with Indonesian filmmaker Wregas Bhanuteja for his third feature film “Levitating.” This is the third time Aview Images collaborates on an Indonesian project, as announced during the Hong Kong FilMart.
The movie tells the tale of Bayu, a teenage Indonesian dreaming to be a shaman for neighborhood trance events. Living in a modest suburban area, people find joy in experiencing spiritual possession. Our main character steps up to tackle the community’s predicament when they face eviction.
Prominent actor Angga Yunanda takes center stage in this production, joined by a stellar cast that includes Anggun C. Sasmi, Maudy Ayunda, Bryan Domani, and Chicco Kurniawan.
Or, using a more conversational tone:

Bhanuteja’s first movie, “Photocopier” (2021), stayed on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list for non-English films for three consecutive weeks. His second film, “Andragogy,” made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and enjoyed significant commercial success in Indonesia, pulling in over half a million viewers.
This version aims to simplify the language while maintaining the original meaning of the text.
Kuek Shee Heng, founder and managing director of Aview Images, expressed his conviction that Wregas Bhanuteja was one of Indonesia’s most visionary filmmakers when he first saw ‘In the Year of Monkey’ at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2016. He was particularly impressed by Bhanuteja’s first two feature films, ‘Photocopier’ and ‘Andragogy,’ which tackled universal themes and enjoyed significant commercial success. He feels privileged to be involved with this film and is excited about helping it reach a wider international audience.
The director emphasized the shared cultural ties enhancing their collaboration: “I’m thrilled to collaborate again with my long-time friend Shee Heng, whom I first met at Cannes 2016 with his short film ‘Arnie’,” stated Bhanuteja. “In that short film, I noticed many parallels between Indonesian culture and Taiwanese culture. The scene of the trance party in our production bears resemblance to certain Taiwanese cultural practices involving trance, possession, and rituals.
Before becoming a part of the team for “Levitating,” I had already worked alongside talented Indonesian filmmakers, such as LoeLoe Hendra on “Tale of the Land” and Luhki Herwanayogi on our ongoing project, “Our Son.
Producer Siera Tamihardja commented that the release of the film aligns with Indonesia’s return to movie theaters. “Indonesia is among the countries where audiences are returning to cinemas after the pandemic, and we have robust local films to boost this trend. We believe that ‘Levitating’ is perfectly timed to capitalize on this resurgence.
Beyond Rekata Studio in Indonesia and Aview Images in Taiwan, the film “Levitating” has gained further backing from Momo Film Co in Singapore and Les Contes Modernes in France. As post-production nears completion, the team is actively looking for international sales partners. The planned release date is during summer.
