Japanese filmmaker Chie Hayakawa, whose “Plan 75” earned a special recognition at Cannes, has successfully enlisted Indonesian production company KawanKawan Media as a collaborator for her upcoming project titled “Renoir.” This partnership was officially announced during the Hong Kong FilMart.
KawanKawan is teaming up with Japan’s Loaded Films, with Eiko Mizuno-Gray and Jason Gray taking on the producer roles. Indonesia becomes part of a strong international collaboration that already includes Japan, France, Singapore, and the Philippines.
Hayakawa’s latest movie unfolds the touching tale of Fuki, an unusual and empathetic 11-year-old girl, who experiences a difficult summer amidst Japan’s booming economy in the late ’80s. The maturing story revolves around Fuki as she grapples with her ailing father and overwhelmed mother at work, while interfacing with numerous adults grappling with their personal troubles.
This new sentence preserves the original meaning but uses simpler language and a more conversational tone to make it easier for readers to understand and follow.
KawanKawan is the studio responsible for creating “Autobiography,” which won at Venice and was directed by Makbul Mubarak, as well as “Tiger Stripes,” a film that took home the prize at Cannes under the direction of Amanda Nell Eu.

Yulia Evina Bhara, founder of KawanKawan Media, expressed her excitement about collaborating with Loaded Films on ‘Renoir,’ directed by Chie Hayakawa. Having been friends with Eiko, Jason, and Chie, we are well-acquainted with the project. We’re eager to be a part of it because the story is compelling and the narrative style is powerful. We believe this partnership will strike a chord with audiences worldwide. Moreover, our goal is also to introduce the film to Indonesian viewers,” said Yulia Evina Bhara.
In the movie, you’ll find up-and-coming actress Yui Suzuki portraying Fuki, along with Hikari Ishida and Lily Franky taking on significant characters.
Goodfellas, a film yet to be showcased at the Cannes Film Market, has already been acquired for global distribution rights by Renoir. According to Mizuno-Gray of Loaded Films, this partnership will allow us to connect with audiences not just in Indonesia, but across all of Southeast Asia as well.
Additionally, domestic studios Daluyong Studios, known for their collaboration on Hayakawa’s “Plan 75,” and Nathan Studios have now teamed up with the global production crew as well.
