Viral AI ‘Chubby’ filter sparks backlash on TikTok

A popular ‘Chubby’ AI filter on TikTok has stirred up controversy, as many users claim that it sends out a damaging body image message due to its representation of different body shapes.

On CapCut, a popular video-editing tool, there’s a filter that makes someone appear as if they’ve gained a lot of weight digitally. Some users find this new trend funny, but others think it’s inappropriate and disrespectful.

The TikTok trend typically features videos where users show their unedited appearance before the filter transitions in, morphing their image into a “chubbier” version.

Many have accompanied the transformation with jokes about going to the gym, regretting recent meals, or bursting into laughter at the results. These videos often rack up millions of views and dominate For You Pages.

Some people are defending the filter, saying that the controversy is exaggerated and it’s just a harmless joke. One commenter stated, “It’s not a big deal,” while another added, “Those who find it offensive are being oversensitive.

AI filter slammed on TikTok

However, the trend has drawn significant criticism, with many labeling it harmful. “Why is body shaming still a thing in 2025?” one user questioned. Another added, “This is so insanely offensive and insensitive. People are literally turning a struggle or an insecurity into A TREND and describing it as ‘disgusting.’”

TikTok creators have also spoken out against the filter and its viral use. Creator stellasolodventures shared a video of herself enjoying the beach, addressing the trend with the caption: “Nah, just my real life body that you’re taking the mick out of.”

A different user, sadiebass16, expressed her annoyance by stating, “This is what people’s lives actually look like, and yet you’re making light of it. Why are we regressing? Are we moving backwards towards the early 2000s?

Many critics argue the trend perpetuates harmful stereotypes and insecurities, particularly for individuals whose natural body types resemble the filter’s effects.

Regardless of any negative responses, the ‘chubby’ aesthetic is persistently growing popular, accompanied by an equivalent ‘slim’ AI filter that alters visuals in a similar manner.

This isn’t the first time a filter has sparked criticism on TikTok. In 2023, creators spoke out against the ‘Bold Glamour’ filter which, according to them, promotes body dysmorphia.
