Pokémon GO is turning nine this year and still going strong with 20 million weekly active players. No surprise there, as the event calendar is so packed that it can be tough to keep up. But hey, at least there’s always something exciting happening. Of course, mistakes happen, but this time, the recent Catch Mastery event had a pretty big one.
Where’s my Shiny?
Catch Mystery was a fishing event that took place on Sunday 16th in Pokémon GO. It was all about sharpening trainers’ catching skills while giving them more chances to encounter certain Pokémon. The main bonuses were:
- Increased Shiny rates for Omanyte, Kabuto, and Archen.
- Double XP for successfully catching Pokémon with Nice Throws or better.
- Double XP for successfully catching Pokémon with Curveball Throws.
However, it seems there was a mistake. Here’s the explanation provided by Niantic regarding this matter in their recent update on X.
Trainers, we have resolved an issue where Shiny Omanyte and Shiny Kabuto did not have an increased chance of being encountered during the Catch Mastery event. We will follow-up soon with more information for affected Trainers.
Niantic hasn’t shared how many players were affected, but since the event was open to everyone worldwide, it’s likely that a good chunk of the playerbase got hit by the issue. This isn’t the first time Niantic has messed up Shiny rates, and understandably, a lot of players feel like they wasted their time on the Catch Mastery event. Some have even said they’re glad Niantic is being sold to Scopely, the developer behind Monopoly GO.
