Nintendo Hints at Smash 6 on Switch 2

A massive clue pointing to a new Super Smash Bros game on the Switch 2 has been discovered ahead of the upcoming Nintendo Direct.

Ever since its debut on the N64, Super Smash Bros has been a mainstay in every Nintendo console, and it appears that this trend won’t stop with the anticipated release of the Switch 2.

Rumors have swirled for years now that Masahiro Sakurai has returned from retirement to work on the next entry in his beloved platform fighter, and we may have gotten a huge clue from a new FCC filing.

As spotted by users on Famiboards, it appears that Nintendo is working on a new GameCube controller for Switch 2 – something that’s become synonymous with the Smash series.

A new GameCube controller could be coming to Switch 2

Although the filing may seem unremarkable at first glance and not obviously identified as a GameCube controller, there was a subtle clue that went unmissed.

“It seems that Nintendo’s attempts to obscure their upcoming NSO controllers in their FCC filings may have been foiled once again by their rather distinctive shapes. The FCC filing for this controller shows a rather unusual label position on the lower left of the rear of the device,” forum user Pokemaniac explained.

Align the labels on your GameCube controller with the location of the C-stick on the GameCube.

Additionally, this controller uses the Switch 2’s model number prefix (BEE) instead of the Switch 1’s (HAC).

So, why does this matter for Smash? Well, with every subsequent entry in the series following Melee, Nintendo has made GameCube controllers an optional way to play, with a new batch of GC controllers made available.

All versions of Super Smash Bros, including Smash on the Wii, Smash 4 on the Wii U, and Smash Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch, allow players to use GameCube controllers alongside the standard controllers provided with those consoles.

It’s quite possible that the tradition will remain unaltered in Smash 6, which further suggests that a new installment of the series might be underway.

The only question is whether it will be a completely new game or a “deluxe edition” of Smash Ultimate with all the existing fighters and stages along with all new content, similar to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

In any case, expect to possibly learn more at the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct on April 2 when more details about the console and its launch lineup are unveiled.
