If you’re worried about whether or not Severance Season 3 will get the green light – don’t be. It may not be official, but it’s guaranteed to be renewed for another season.
The hit show “Severance” has taken the spotlight on Apple TV+, surpassing “Ted Lasso” to become their most popular series after its second season was released.
Of course, the question on everyone’s mind is whether there will be a Season 3, and if so, when can we expect it? Here are some updates we have at present.
Will there be a Season 3 of Severance?
The third season of “Severance” on Apple TV+ has yet to be officially announced, but we’re likely to hear about its renewal soon, possibly this week.
As a devoted fan, I get why shows sometimes get the axe. If a series doesn’t draw enough viewers, it becomes clear to the streaming service that it’s not meeting its expectations, just like how Netflix decided to cancel The Recruit after the second season didn’t quite measure up to the first.
Severance has continually exceeded expectations. According to Nielsen, the series has accumulated over three billion streaming minutes since Season 2 premiered in January. Also, the show’s popularity is encouraging other people to watch it; during the week of February 10, 40% of the show’s streaming time was for Season 1.
Since Apple TV+ series seldom make it onto Nielsen’s ratings, Severance has undeniably stood out as a standout hit in this year’s television lineup.
In other words, why would Apple not renew it for Season 3?
Is there a Severance Season 3 release date?
There’s no release date for Severance Season 3 right now, but it’s expected to be released sometime in 2027 at the absolute earliest.
Lest we forget the three-year gap between Season 1’s “She’s alive!” cliffhanger and the start of Season 2. There were other factors (a pandemic, the Hollywood strikes, alleged behind-the-scenes drama), but Stiller and co. are hoping to turn around another season in a shorter amount of time.
Creator Dan Erickson told Gizmodo that he’d “certainly like [Season 3]” to come out sooner.
He clarified that the discussions we’ve had pertaining to this topic have been part of our ongoing dialogue. Notably, he pointed out that the production of Season 2 required approximately the same duration as Season 1.
“The difference, of course, is Season 1 nobody knew what the show was and so they weren’t waiting for it. But at the same time, you’re always looking to sort of fine-tune the process and take what works and leave what doesn’t work and streamline things. So, my hope is that if there is a Season 3, it’s going to be sooner.”
A two-year wait for Severance Season 3 seems the most likely, so prepare to be patient.
Who will be in the cast?
In the upcoming season 3 of “Severance,” Adam Scott is expected to reprise his role as Mark, joining the rest of the main cast members.
- Britt Lower as Helly/Helena
- Zach Cherry as Dylan
- Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel
- Tramell Tillman as Milchick
- Dichen Lachman as Gemma/Ms Casey
- Jen Tullock as Devon
- Michael Siberry as Jame Eagan
There are two question marks: Burt (Christopher Walken) and Irving (John Turturro). According to Ben Stiller, their story is over “for now” after the end of Episode 9.
Lumon is a really strong company, and Burt understands this. He’s made a decision, but we don’t know what will happen to Burt as a result,” he hinted to Variety.
It seems to me that he’s acting independently, and it looks like he might be taking some risks with his actions.
What could happen in Season 3?
With the Severance Season 2 finale airing this week, it’s too early to speculate what could happen in Season 3. However, a writers room is already underway for the third season.
“You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it,” Stiller told Collider.
“That’s always been a part of it for us, really understanding where it’s heading to, and Apple’s been really supportive of that and been sensitive to what the story is and not saying, ‘Okay, this is something that has to keep going as long as it’s successful.’
“It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our Season 3 work.”
