The Playmaker Closes IPA Asia Deal on Heist Comedy ‘Two to One,’ Starring Sandra Hüller (EXCLUSIVE)

Munich-based sales agency the Playmaker has signed a key distribution deal for Japan with IPA Asia on its hit heist comedy “Two to One,” starring Academy Award-nominated German thesp Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Zone of Interest”).

Hüller is joined in the cast by Max Riemelt (“Sense 8”) and Ronald Zehrfeld (“Barbara,” “Phoenix”). The film is directed by Natja Brunckhorst, known for her critically acclaimed work on “Alles in Bester Ordnung” and “Wie Feuer und Flamme.”

“Two to One” is based on true events that took place during the reunification of Germany in 1990. In the chaos during the disintegration of the German Democratic Republic, a group of clever East Germans seize the chance to retrieve hidden millions from an underground vault. As they outsmart formidable opponents, the heist takes an unexpected turn when money officially unrecognized in East Germany circulates.

Pic has already sold widely in other territories, including KMBO in France, A Contracorriente in Spain, Madman in Australia and Rosebud in Greece. The German distributor is X-Verleih.

Brunckhorst’s career kicked off with her powerful portrayal of young street addict Christiane F. in the 1981 film “Christiane F. — Wir Kinder Vom Bahnhof Zoo.”

She later transitioned to screenwriting, penning scripts for the television series “Einsatz Hamburg Süd” and several episodes of the police show “Tatort”. Her screenplay for “Feuer und Flamme,” which drew on her own life, won her the German Film Award in 2001. Brunckhorst’s writing talent also contributed to the award-winning children’s film “Amelie Rennt.” She further expanded her repertoire by directing the successful film “Alles in Bester Ordnung.”

Alongside “Two to One,” The Playmaker’s slate includes the love story “Muenter & Kandinsky — The Blue Rider” and the powerful drama “Never Alone” from director Klaus Härö. Also joining the lineup is creature horror “Paws,” featuring a deadly polar bear, and the family animation projects “Ploey 2 — The Legend of the Winds” and “Pirate Mo — The Legend of the Red Ruby.”
