Massive brawl breaks out in Costco parking lot after Pokemon 151 restock

The scarcity of certain Pokemon TCG products has once more led to anti-social behaviour, this time in the parking lot of a Costco store in Toronto, Canada.

First appeared in September 2023, the unique collection known as Pokemon 151, which focuses solely on the initial set of Pokemon from the franchise that debuted in Red & Blue, has garnered significant attention and enthusiasm among enthusiasts and fans alike.

Due to its widespread popularity and high demand, The Pokemon Company had to print additional copies to keep up, but even with the excess supply, it hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of resellers.

Brawl breaks out in Costco parking lot

A video clip was posted on the Pokemon Trading Card Game subreddit on March 16th, capturing an incident in a Costco parking lot where a single person got into heated exchanges with others. Following a clear shove towards one man who kept shouting “It’s Pokemon!” at them, this same individual then struck another individual.

Moving away, the person filming the dispute took a step back, revealing various Costco shoppers entering the scene, carrying numerous Pokemon merchandise boxes. The video doesn’t make it clear what caused the argument in the first place.

This is far from the first time physical violence has broken out over Pokemon TCG products. The release of Blooming Waters on February 7, a gift box set containing 151 packs, led to similar occurrences, with one incident taking place within a Costco store itself.

Scalping and squabbles over short-supply products have long been unwanted aspects of the hobby. Following notices of huge stock shortages before Prismatic Evolutions hit shelves on January 17, many independent stores placed strict rules on purchase limits or refused to sell the expansion entirely to avoid such circumstances.

With upcoming set Journey Together expected to be one of the most popular of the Scarlet & Violet era, it could be some time before tensions in the hobby cool off and secondary market prices fall to a more sustainable level.
