Gabby Windey’s Post-Traitors Press Tour Won Late Night This Week

Last week was quiet on late-night television, given the extended hours of daylight due to Daylight Saving Time. Seth Meyers criticized this practice during his segment “Ya Burnt!” and it’s understandable why he did so. After all, wasn’t it a legislative body that voted to abolish this years ago? Why not implement the change for the sake of efficiency or whatever other reason? With all the changes happening in government, this seems like an obvious one to address as well.

This week’s notable news story involved the stock market, which unfortunately took a downturn. This might be why John Mulaney’s comedy show, “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney,” opted for the theme “Lending People Money” in its L.A.-absent format premiere. Whether this was a wise choice or not remains to be seen. The skits were particularly sharp this week (as you’ll see below), making the financial mishaps even more pronounced. It’s challenging to find humor in other people’s personal hardships, as many of the calls unfortunately demonstrated. Instead, make fun of your own misfortunes – like Joan Baez did when discussing her repeated Tesla accidents. Baez was a captivating guest this week on late-night shows. But who else excelled this week? Let’s explore together.

Shout-out to Researchers

The show “Have I Got News for You” frequently grapples with the very news itself, which can make joke-making quite challenging given our current times. However, their research team never fails to amaze, consistently coming up with insightful takes on segments like “Two Lies and a Truth.” This week, they uncovered a Chester Cheeto advertisement that seems to be permanently lodged in Andrew Cuomo’s memory, prompting him to refer to himself as a “cool, relaxed guy.” It appears that Andrew Cuomo fancies himself as Chester Cheeto, and this is certainly intriguing news to me.

Not the Bayang!

In the show “After Midnight,” they’re always coming up with hilariously dumb games for comedians. This week, Brendan Scannell, Michelle Collins, and Kurt Braunohler were tasked to give DIY bangs to three random items, complete with a backstory! Everybody did great, but Michelle really shone. She admitted she cuts her own bob, which is quite impressive. Kudos to you, Michelle! You’ve outdone yourself!

I’m thrilled to see the benefits of my movement coaching techniques shining through! Take Parker Posey, John Mulaney, and Jack Quaid, for instance. On Monday, Mulaney made a speedy entrance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show, practically bolting to the couch and offering a quick handshake. The energy was unusual, and it was amusing to watch Mulaney and Kimmel, real-life friends, analyze it. Later in the night, Quaid beat Mulaney’s time to the couch and gave Guillermo a more enthusiastic handshake. However, the most striking entrance of the week belonged to Parker Posey on Late Night with her scarf-blouse ensemble. She was doing some unique “Stevie Nicks’s Fajita Roundup” performance art. When Seth Meyers asked her about her vibe, she hoped for a comparison to Endora from Bewitched, but it turned out to be more like Gena Rowlands on the poster for Opening Night – quite cinematic!

John Mulaney’s New Set

It’s disappointing that John Mulaney’s talk show is moving away from its Los Angeles focus, as this specific setting often fuels his best work. For instance, the sketch “Oh, Hello” wouldn’t have the same charm if it were about two old men in Lansing, Michigan. Even though Mulaney’s new set introduced a final Los Angeles-inspired movie parody (with the “Body Double” theme playing in my mind), I can’t help but miss the “Willy Loman Focus Group” sketch from the first episode of “Everybody’s Live.” Netflix, please upload this sketch on YouTube so I can enjoy it again and spoil a Gay-Guy Music-Video Night for myself.

Robby Hoffman may find himself playing the supporting role in their relationship, given that Gabby Windey is currently considered the most hilarious individual globally. This week, Windey graced both “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Watch What Happens Live,” following her win on “Traitors.” In each appearance, she humorously requested her earnings from the network. Her wit was particularly enjoyable on “WWHL,” where she broke down basic “Bachelor” concepts for Andy Cohen and even came up with a potential Housewives catchphrase: “I’m swift to sever ties, but I enjoy weaving.
