Following his role in the AI-themed thriller “Companion” last month, Jack Quaid returns to the big screen this weekend with “Novocaine,” a blend of action and humor, where he stars as a character who is unable to feel physical pain.
So far, the R-rated movie produced by Paramount has raked in $1.75 million at the box office during previews. Predictions suggest it could earn between $10 million and $12 million during its opening weekend, potentially outperforming last week’s top earner, “Mickey 17.” The upcoming sci-fi film from Warner Bros., directed by Bong Joon Ho (of “Parasite” fame) and featuring Robert Pattinson, is anticipated to see a drop of around 55% to 60% in its second weekend, resulting in earnings between $8 million and $9 million.
As a movie enthusiast, it’s a delight for me to say that “Novocaine” was made with just $18 million, which is almost like its lead character – it shouldn’t be experiencing any financial strain at the box office. On the contrary, “Mickey 17” had a heftier price tag of $118 million and needs to earn approximately $275 million to $300 million globally to turn a profit.
In “Novocaine,” Quaid plays Nathan Caine, an ordinary businessman who happens to have a unique condition – he can’t feel pain. However, this all changes when he encounters his ideal woman, portrayed by Amber Midthunder. Tragically, she gets abducted during a bank robbery. In an attempt to save her, Nathan channels his superhuman resilience and employs extreme force to overcome the criminals.

In the movie “Novocaine,” Quaid plays Nathan Caine, a regular businessman, who possesses an extraordinary ability – he is insensitive to pain. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets his dream girl, Amber Midthunder’s character. Unfortunately, she gets kidnapped during a bank robbery. Determined to save her, Nathan uses his remarkable tolerance for pain to take down the criminals in a violent confrontation.
This weekend, you’ll find two new releases: “Black Bag,” a spy thriller from director Steven Soderbergh and Focus Features, featuring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, and the satirical comedy “Opus” by A24, starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich. The anticipated earnings for “Black Bag” are between $7 million and $8 million, while “Opus” is aiming for a more modest $2 million to $4 million.
