“And I walked away with the grand prize.” Harrison Ford’s life changed after one phone call from George Lucas, and it wasn’t about Star Wars at all

As a gamer, I could say: Receiving a single call from George Lucas was the game-changer for me, but it wasn’t the phone conversation itself that filled me in about my character in Star Wars. Although playing this iconic role is undeniably known worldwide and played a significant part in my fame, it’s not the one I cherish the most.

The character Indiana Jones significantly altered the course of the actor’s life, and that individual was Harrison Ford himself. It was the opportunity to portray him that brought about substantial changes in Ford’s life. Prior to receiving the role, Lucas phoned Ford, suggesting an intriguing film he should consider. Upon Lucas’ recommendation, Ford was requested to read the script and later meet with Steven Spielberg, director of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” From that point on, things were never the same for Ford.

Harrison Ford told the story during an interview with WSJ.

George Lucas phoned me and shared that he’d be sending a script to my home, requesting me to read it and pay a visit to Steven Spielberg’s residence for a brief chat. Subsequently, I was awarded the top prize.

As a gamer, I’ve been living as Indy for four long decades, and I’ve never failed to express my deep respect for the character. It’s no wonder, then, that I hold this role dear – it’s not just iconic, but personal too. And let’s not forget Han Solo from Star Wars, a character I might not always praise, but one I reprised in the sequel trilogy after all these years.
