Film Factory Entertainment has purchased global distribution rights for Daniel Guzmán’s movie titled “The Redemption.” This film features Guzmán himself, Itziar Ituño from “Money Heist,” Susana Abaitua, who led the popular Netflix series “Crazy About You,” and Luis Tosar, a co-star in the 2024 second highest-grossing Spanish film “Undercover.
Under the title “La Deuda” (The Debt), this compelling Spanish production headlines Spain’s Malaga Festival on March 14th, offering a gripping drama brimming with suspenseful thriller elements right from the start.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but appreciate the third cinematic offering from the talented Guzmán, who first captivated us with his 2015 debut “Nothing in Return.” This film earned Spanish Academy Goyas for both new director and breakout actor, Miguel Herrán. Much like his previous works, “The Redemption” embodies several distinct traits that are truly Guzmán’s signature: A deep emotional resonance, a firm conviction in the strength of found families, a thoughtful reference to social issues, and a tender empathy for those struggling against adversity.
In this setting, we have Lucas, 47 years old, and Antonia, a vibrant senior over 90, who cohabit Antonia’s urban apartment. Despite Lucas being unemployed, they manage to maintain a joyful life – with Lucas taking care of Antonia’s requirements and both being uplifted by his positive outlook – until an investment group purchases the property with plans to convert it into vacation rentals.
In a short while, the fund issues an eviction notice to Antonia, causing Lucas, who was determined to prevent Antonia from losing her home and finding himself in a tight financial spot, to act impulsively with severe repercussions that drastically alter his life trajectory. This precipitates the gripping suspense of the movie as Lucas’ situation rapidly spirals beyond his grasp.
According to Guzmán, ‘The Redemption’ is a deeply personal film that focuses on characters who, despite being faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, maintain an unyielding optimism. Through love, admiration, and understanding, these characters confront their lives with a sense of joy, humor, and a strong sense of pride in their class.
Guzmán’s El Niño Producciones produces with Aquí y Allí Films and La Mirada Oblicua.
Pedro Hernández, leader at Aquí y Allí Films, refers to “Life and Nothing More,” directed by Antonio Méndez Esparza, as the biggest attempt so far to appeal to a wide audience for their company. The movie has been purchased by RTVE, Movistar Plus+, Telemadrid, and Canal Sur. It also received funding from Spain’s ICAA film agency and the Community of Madrid.
Film Factory endorses Guzmán’s work and his team, indicating their engagement and faith in it. They are particularly thrilled to collaborate with Daniel Guzmán once more on this intriguing and avant-garde tale. Vicente Canales, the director of Film Factory, believes that ‘The Redemption’ will gain a broad international audience. Vicente Canales will oversee the film’s international distribution.
