Seth Rogen Says Sony Wouldn’t Allow Jonah Hill to Use a PlayStation in ‘Superbad’: He Can’t ‘Interact With Our Products. It’s Too Vile a Character’

Seth Rogen found Sony’s objection to Jonah Hill’s character using a PlayStation 2 in “Superbad” scene particularly offensive, as they deemed the character unacceptable.

The star commented humorously during an interview with RottenTomatoes at the SXSW premiere of ‘The Studio’ on Apple TV+, saying, ‘They said my character is too inappropriate to be associated with their products. I found that quite offensive since it’s a representation of me.’

Sony produced the film, and we learned that the character played by Jonah Hill, Seth, was deemed unacceptable by the studio. In one scene, they’re playing video games, but Jonah wasn’t even allowed to handle a PlayStation.

Rogen admitted that the production eventually conceded to the studio’s demands. However, Hill doesn’t appear using Sony gear in the movie, while Michael Cera’s character, Evan, is spotted playing “The Getaway: Black Monday” on a PlayStation 2 during an initial sequence.

Rogen teamed up with his long-term collaborator Evan Goldberg to pen “Superbad.” The story was initially developed during their teenage years and is somewhat inspired by their high school experiences in the 90s. Hill appeared in the 2007 comedy, taking on the role that mirrors Rogen, marking his debut as a leading actor in a film.

In a reflective look back on the 15th anniversary of “Superbad,” its producer Judd Apatow mentioned that he had long harbored the desire to create a sequel. However, Jonah Hill jokingly suggested they should wait until they were around 70 or 80 years old for it. Instead, Apatow proposed an alternate idea: a “Superbad” set in college where Jonah’s character flunks out and unexpectedly shows up to visit Michael Cera at his college.
