A year following Alex Garland’s provocative dystopian drama “Civil War,” the British filmmaker presented a unique take on war movies to a gathering of American veterans in Hollywood last night.
For the very first time, a gripping 2006 mission account from Iraq was shown on screen, created by Garland and co-director Ray Mendoza. This film premiered at the American Legion Post 43 – an iconic VA establishment situated on Highland Ave., which was constructed in 1919 by veterans of World War I and their allies who were involved in the movie industry.
Mendoza took part in and successfully completed an operation that formed the core of the series “Warfare.” This series depicts the story of 13 Navy SEALs who found themselves trapped in an apartment building in Ramadi, roughly 70 miles west of Baghdad. The show’s production team painstakingly re-created their mission on screen, attracting some of the brightest up-and-coming actors for its star-studded cast. Actors like Charles Melton, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from “Reservation Dogs,” Kit Connor, Joseph Quinn, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, and Michael Gandolfini were among those who joined the cast.
Justin Garza, filmmaker from the Warrior Heritage Foundation, introduced the film by saying, “This isn’t a typical Hollywood production.” One unique aspect of “Warfare” is that it manages to create tension, evoke strong emotions, and establish high-stakes situations in just 95 minutes. Even when the soldiers are brushing off flies, using chewing tobacco, or using plastic bottles for relief, the intensity remains palpable.
Garland shared during a post-screening Q&A with his partner Mendoza that they first crossed paths on the set of ‘Civil War.’ What struck him most about this individual was not only their quick learning abilities but also their exceptional teaching skills. It wasn’t just about showing our actors and others how to handle weapons, it was about helping them embody their roles authentically. This movie, according to Garland, is a true reflection of honesty – raw, unapologetic, and sincere.
Without revealing crucial plot details, a SEAL team, coexisting with an Iraqi family who are just as frightened, unexpectedly encounters a fierce enemy assault within the apartment building they were exploring. The artful execution of extraction in “Warfare” was highly praised by the American Legion, leaving viewers spellbound. There’s nothing glamorous about “Warfare,” but its meticulously planned movements and the impact of every screen decision, no matter how minor, resonated profoundly with the audience.
Melton remarked about his first film role in Todd Haynes’ ‘May December’, following his 2023 Oscar bid. He said it was uncommon as an actor to be a part of something that positively impacted his life. It broadened his viewpoint on various aspects. He believes he developed personally and turned into a better person, thanks to the people who were involved in this project.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can share that for three grueling weeks, I and my fellow actors dove headfirst into a military bootcamp to ready ourselves for our roles in the film. The climax of this intense training saw us all shaving our heads and getting matching tattoos, symbolizing our bond and a significant scene in the movie that carries the poignant message, “Call On Me.
The movie “Warfare” doesn’t come with the usual “based on” or “inspired by a true story” disclaimer in its promotional materials. Instead, it explicitly states, “Everything is rooted in memory.” The film will be released on April 11, and it was dedicated to one of the SEALs rescued during the 2006 mission, Elliot Miller, who attended the premiere on Wednesday.
