32-year-old Douglas Kiker, who made a deep impact on “American Idol” Season 18 with his emotional audition that moved judge Katy Perry to tears, tragically passed away. His sisters, Angela Evans and Donna Kiker Carrillos-Ramirez, shared the sad news on Facebook last Wednesday, without revealing the cause of his death.
I’m deeply saddened to share that my cherished brother, Douglas Kiker, has departed. He was adored by countless people and his absence will be profoundly felt. Now, I hope he’s singing among the angels. Let us all keep our family in our thoughts and prayers as we navigate this challenging time.
Today, the call I received was one nobody desires – we’ve sadly lost a truly extraordinary individual. His infectious smile could light up any room, and he had an uncanny ability to bring laughter wherever he went. Although I wasn’t his parent, my affection for him never waned. My parents did an exceptional job in raising such a wonderful soul. Douglas Kiker, you will be deeply missed. Soar high, and give my grandmother a warm greeting.

Today I got the dreaded call – we’ve tragically lost a fantastic person. He was always grinning from ear to ear, and he knew exactly how to make someone laugh. Although I wasn’t his parent, my love for him never faded. My parents did an incredible job in raising such a terrific individual. Douglas Kiker, you will be sorely missed. Take flight, and tell Grandma hello.
In his debut performance during Season 18’s start in 2020, on “American Idol”, Kiker shone brightly with a touching rendition of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road”. His performance resonated deeply with judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, who joined him playing the piano. So profound was his act that Katy Perry was visibly moved to tears.
I simply had to express, Kiker, that you’re quite extraordinary,” I shared with you, Richie. Known as the ‘Singing Garbage Man’ among his Alabama peers and resonating with the show’s frequent viewers, your unique title truly embodies your spirit. Though you were eliminated shortly after, your Season 18 finale appearance in a virtual performance during the COVID-19 pandemic was truly unforgettable.
Approximately a year following his “American Idol” performances, Kiker faced arrest in May 2021, being accused of committing acts of domestic violence.
Carrillos-Ramirez has started a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the funeral costs for Kiker. We are deeply grateful for your kindness, compassion, and generosity during these tough times, and we truly value every one of you.
