There Are Now Over 1,000 Xbox Play Anywhere Games

Microsoft recently celebrated a significant achievement in its Xbox Play Anywhere program, marking nearly a decade since its inception. Now, over 1,000 games are compatible with this feature, enabling customers to purchase a game once and enjoy playing it across various Xbox consoles, Windows 10/11 PCs, and certain handheld gaming devices for PC.

Back in September 2016, I stumbled upon this nifty feature called Xbox Play Anywhere. It started as a collaboration between my Xbox One and PC, allowing me to play games seamlessly across both platforms. Plus, it comes with cross-save functionality – sweet! But here’s the catch: it only works with digital versions of games.

Now, you might think ReCore was just another launch title, but for us Xbox gamers, it marked the beginning of the Xbox Play Anywhere era. Soon after, Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, and Halo Wars 2 joined the party.

Just to clarify, though it may sound similar, Xbox Game Pass’ cloud gaming is a different beast compared to Xbox Play Anywhere. So keep that in mind while you’re gaming!

In simpler terms, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation, Jason Ronald, stated that Xbox Play Anywhere enabled games see a 20% increase in gameplay due to their flexibility. This is intriguing since the term “on the go” was used, which has sparked interest following a recent report suggesting an Xbox-branded handheld device might be released this year.

The current promotional efforts by Xbox are geared towards emphasizing that it’s not just a conventional home console, but rather, a versatile platform. However, this doesn’t imply Microsoft is abandoning its hardware production. In fact, rumors suggest that a potential successor to the Xbox Series X might be unveiled in 2027, and there’s even talk of it launching alongside an Xbox-branded handheld device developed in-house.
