As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the highly anticipated political thriller, “Words of War,” based on the life of the slain Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, has garnered interest in several international regions. This gripping film, which boasts Sean Penn among its executive producers, promises a compelling narrative that delves into the complexities of political intrigue and journalistic bravery.
This movie, featuring a talented cast of BAFTA nominees including Maxine Peake, Ciarán Hinds, and Jason Isaacs, has been purchased for distribution in the U.K. and Ireland by Signature Entertainment. They have plans for a theatrical release. Simultaneously, Eagle Pictures has acquired it for Italy, Divisa Films for Spain, Dimeo Films for Poland, and Front Row Entertainment for the Middle East. In the United States, Rolling Pictures will release it in theaters, while Neon and Bleecker Street’s joint-venture DECAL will handle home entertainment rights after the theatrical run has concluded.
Under the direction of James Strong (“Broadchurch”) and written by Eric Poppen (“Cyberjack”), the film “Words of War” is inspired by real events and chronicles the courageous mission of renowned journalist and human rights advocate Politkovskaya. In her relentless pursuit for truth, she became an independent voice for the people of Russia, risking her own life despite numerous threats and acts of violence. Tragically, Politkovskaya was eventually silenced, but her legacy continues, serving as a stark reminder of the perils faced by journalists worldwide, emphasizing the need to safeguard their freedom to report news without fear of retribution or harm.
Ian Hart, Ellie Bamber, Harry Lawtey, Naomi Battrick, and Ben Miles complete the ensemble for the production.
The movie titled ‘Words of War’ is brought to you by Emmy winner Mark Maxey from Rolling Pictures (‘Space Oddity’), Miriam Segal of Good Films Collective (‘The Infiltrator’), and Paul Brennan & Kia Jam. Penn and Eric Swalwell are the executive producers. The film is scheduled for U.S. release on May 2, 2025, coinciding with the United Nations’ World Press Freedom Day.
Matthew Shreder from Concourse Media, acting as the global rights representative, finalized the agreement with Begüm Kayacan Parodi, representing Signature Entertainment, on behalf of the movie creators.
Signature Entertainment’s decision to release this significant film in cinemas across the UK is a cause for excitement, according to Shreder,” he said. “Featuring a talented British cast and tackling a potent and heart-wrenchingly relevant story, it’s fantastic that a renowned film distribution company like Signature Entertainment is seizing this opportunity to make Anna’s tale known at a time when the UK and global events resonate deeply with its message.
