For the first time, I’ve dived into Monster Hunter Wilds – a series that’s kept me at bay for so long, considering my affinity for its monster-slaying gameplay, one would expect me to be a dedicated fan by now. However, I find myself wading through the gory monsters and their viscera. Additionally, I’ve encountered quite a challenge navigating its complex menus filled with symbols and abbreviations. Fortunately, it seems that even Kristen McGuire, the voice actress for beloved blacksmith Gemma in English, is facing similar struggles with the arcane script.
In a recent post on the MHWilds subreddit (thanks to GamesRadar+), McGuire has been seeking guidance. “I’m new to the Monster Hunter series, and I feel quite unprepared. Could you offer some tips for someone who is completely new to the game like myself?
The community has been remarkably helpful, considering all the troubles I’ve had making Gemma forge what seems like a lot of stuff. However, a few remarks from McGuire particularly resonate with my situation as a person with food allergies. When one player told her to “get accustomed to the grind,” she responded: “I enjoy grinding, so it doesn’t bother me, laughs. The overall design of the menu, however, is a bit perplexing.
According to McGuire’s team of knowledgeable Monster Hunter veterans, there’s a consensus: The menus in this game are troublesome. One player puts it, “I’ve played every title in the series and this menu was an initial challenge for the first few days.” Another agrees, “It’s not you; it’s Capcom. Monster Hunter is infamous for poor menu design, and Wilds takes the cake so far.” Essentially, they advise, you’ll just need a lot of patience.
In another remark, she notes: “The menu seems to be in a language I don’t understand,” which is an accurate observation. Surprisingly, I’m picking up new information just by scanning her comment exchanges—for instance, there appears to be a menu I missed entirely that demonstrates all your Palico’s abilities with video examples.
This situation calls to mind a recent chat I had with a friend, where I inquired about the symbols next to a monster’s vulnerabilities—only to learn that fewer stars indicate less effectiveness. It seems counterintuitive to me, and I can’t find any indication that I missed a clue somewhere. In a similar vein, Fraser Brown from PC Gamer has been grappling with the puzzling multiplayer mechanics, but thankfully, we have a guide to assist you. So, join me, McGuire, in embracing the challenging world of Monster Hunter.
