Dennis Quaid’s ‘Reagan’ Biopic Picked Up by Universal for International Distribution (EXCLUSIVE)

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the biopic “Reagan,” starring Dennis Quaid, which surprisingly became a blockbuster in the U.S., raking in $30 million, is now ready to captivate audiences worldwide! Universal Pictures Content Group is spearheading its international release.

The movie, titled “A Secret Life,” was helmed by Sean McNamara and features Dennis Quaid portraying a former Hollywood star who later becomes the U.S. President as a Republican. Penelope Ann Miller plays Nancy Reagan, his First Lady, while Mena Suvari is cast as his first wife Jane Wyman. Lesley-Anne Down takes on the role of Margaret Thatcher, and Kevin Dillon portrays Jack L. Warner. Jon Voight assumes the character of Petrovich, a Soviet claiming to have spied on Reagan for years. The film was initially released in U.S. theaters on August 30 by ShowBiz Direct, with ancillary rights held by Lionsgate. It also made its way to screens in various countries such as Spain, Portugal, Lithuania, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, and Poland through Voltage Pictures.

It’s clear that EbMaster is aware that UPCG holds the rights to distribute “Reagan” in various global territories beyond those where it has previously released the film in cinemas, and they are intending a digital-exclusive debut instead.

Despite receiving heavy criticism from many critics, “Reagan” and “The Wild Robot” were equally the most beloved films of 2024 on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, a gauge for audience response. The filmmakers stated that the gap between the overall critic score of 18% and the audience score of 80% was an all-time record, surpassing the previous high of 65% set by “The Boondock Saints.

According to EbMaster‘s review, the movie’s casual portrayal of significant historical events from the 20th century might appeal to those who already support it, but may not attract many new fans.

“Reagan” recently screened at Jordan Peterson’s ARC conference in London.
