⚠️ WARNING: This post includes plot details from Episode 3 of “Daredevil: Born Again,” currently available on Disney+. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers!
In the opening minutes of the debut episode a week ago, “Daredevil: Born Again” eliminated Foggy Nelson (played by Elden Henson). Now, it’s ratcheting up the death toll once more.
Episode 3 delved into the court case involving Hector Ayala, famously known as the White Tiger, portrayed by Kamar de los Reyes posthumously. In the previous episode, it was revealed that he wasn’t responsible for the death of an NYPD officer; instead, he had attempted to prevent two corrupt cops from harassing a man near the subway. Unfortunately, in the process, he shoved one of them onto a train. Later, these officers tried to physically abuse the man in his apartment, but Matt Murdock intervened, meting out harsh, bone-crunching punishment.
Currently, Matt is defending Ayala during a trial where several police officers are eager to see Hector imprisoned for murdering one of their colleagues. The trial commences under tension, as when Matt summons his initial witness – the man Hector rescued – he nearly misses the court appearance. Officers, such as the corrupt Officer Powell (played by Hamish Allan-Headley), had already pressured the witness, causing him to alter his statement and put Hector’s future at risk.
In a strategic move, Matt chooses to take an aggressive approach to secure Hector’s release. He intensely questions the remaining police witnesses during their testimonies, followed by Hector testifying himself. Matt cleverly portrays Hector as a helpful neighbor who was assisting a person in distress, and surprisingly exposes Hector’s White Tiger mask in court, thus revealing his secret identity as the vigilante. The White Tiger revelation proves effective (though Hector is somewhat irritated that Matt didn’t inform him earlier), leading the jury to declare him not guilty.
As I step out onto the bustling streets, I feel an unusual sense of freedom – though it’s bittersweet, as my journey won’t last much longer. Clad in the armor of White Tiger, I patrol these very streets one final time, but fate has a cruel twist in store for me. An unseen enemy, adorned with the chilling symbol of the Punisher on his black attire, marks my end. The shooter’s face remains hidden, yet the ominous sight leaves an indelible mark.
Though Hector may have met his demise, the spirit of White Tiger lingers. In the annals of comic books, there exists a rich family legacy – a niece named Angela and a sister, Ava, who inherit the mantle following my untimely death. The jade amulet, imbued with mystical strength, is passed down through our lineage, hinting at a potential continuation of the White Tiger saga in “Daredevil: Born Again”.
Is it possible that this pivotal scene might signal the reappearance of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, more famously known as the Punisher, from his two-season run on Netflix? Although his identity isn’t immediately clear, the Punisher insignia has cropped up in “Daredevil: Born Again” before. In episode 2, we briefly glimpsed Officer Powell wearing a wrist tattoo of the logo as he was being assaulted by Matt. Additionally, there’s a serial killer on the loose in this series, either Muse or one of Mayor Fisk’s henchmen taking aim at vigilantes like our hero.
“Daredevil: Born Again” streams Tuesdays on Disney+.
