Chelsea Handler Talks Kids, Her Career and How to Survive Trump at She Media SXSW Session: ‘I Have the Body I Wanted at 20, and I’m 50’

During a vibrant talk at the She Media Co-Lab Whole Life Health program, which took place at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, Chelsea Handler fearlessly tackled topics such as her physical body at age 50, her choice not to have kids, her stance against Donald Trump, and other personal matters.

Comedian Handler, an industry veteran, disputed the widespread notion that youth is overly celebrated in our culture during a conversation with Samantha Skey from She Media on March 9. Instead, she feels she’s never been more excellent since hitting the half-century milestone. “I have the body I always wanted when I was 20, and now I’m 50,” she quipped. Essentially, her message was that everyone should be excited about what lies ahead, as everything seems to fall into place in your 40s and 50s.

The She Media setup aims to assist women in mapping out their journeys through life’s latter stages, professionally speaking. Handler delved into a question that is inevitable for most women – addressing it head-on and clarifying her reasons behind not having children.

Handler clarified that just because she doesn’t wish to have kids herself, it doesn’t mean she dislikes them. In fact, she spends a considerable amount of time with children, which allows her to dedicate more energy towards them due to not having her own kids. If she did have children, she might be more focused on them and less able to offer as much to others.

Similar to many careers in Hollywood, Handler’s journey has had its fair share of triumphs and setbacks. She made history as the host of E!’s “Chelsea Lately” from 2007-2014, paving a new path in late-night television. Today, she is highly sought after as one of the industry’s top touring comedians. Handler openly expressed her personal satisfaction at persevering in such an unpredictable and ever-changing field. This experience has instilled in her the importance of trusting her gut feelings.

Handler expressed confidence in herself, stating that she has gathered sufficient evidence of her own accomplishments. To encourage herself, she often reminds herself, ‘I’ve got this.’ For her, it’s essential to maintain a connection with the young, aspiring girl within herself. This is the theme that begins her book, addressing her older self as the younger girl, depicting the woman she envisioned becoming – strong, independent, self-reliant financially, and someone who stood up for causes. She also wanted to be supportive of others and show up for them. To achieve this goal, she emphasized the importance of remembering that inner child, the person one was before life’s hardships and disappointments tarnished their spirit. Her advice is to carry this childlike essence with you on your journey, ensuring you never lose sight of who you truly are.

The handler additionally shared a captivating tale from the initial phase of her professional journey, in which adversity unexpectedly transformed into an exceptional chance.

In my first year at the Montreal Comedy Festival, around 27 or 28 years old, I had an incredibly dismal performance. It was so terrible that I felt like my life was over. Zach Galifianakis guided me to my hotel room and said, “You should be alone now, no one can help you.” He wasn’t being cruel; he simply couldn’t console me. That moment was a crushing defeat for me. However, it turned out to be my breakthrough, as within just 72 hours, I had another opportunity to perform in front of the executive who hadn’t witnessed my Montreal show. Her name was Grace Wu, and she worked at NBC, eventually offering me a development deal for my own TV show. So, mere days after experiencing the lowest point of my professional career, I reached the pinnacle. This is a story I want everyone to remember: even in the face of failure, there’s always hope for success. Rainbows often follow the darkest storms…

Among other topics, Handler offered the crowd some advice for making it through Trump 2.0:

As a film enthusiast, I’ve endured a great deal of turmoil, sorrow, and unpleasantness during the last term of our previous President. I refuse to go through that ordeal again, I pledge. My peace and joy are not up for grabs, they’re not open to being taken away.
