Known Associates Acquires African Rights to Raoul Peck’s Cannes Prizewinner ‘Ernest Cole: Lost and Found’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a devoted enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve become part of a group that has secured the rights across Africa for Raoul Peck’s acclaimed documentary, “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found.” This powerful piece, which won accolades at Cannes, is about the courageous apartheid-era South African photographer, and it kicks off the Joburg Film Festival on March 11. I can hardly wait to see it!

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that a leading South African media company has taken a strategic step towards expanding its reach, both on the African continent and in the U.S. This move is part of their ambitious plan to intensify distribution efforts. Kicking off this global expansion is the theatrical release of “Lost and Found” in South Africa, set for March 26th. It’s an exciting time for cinema enthusiasts like myself!

Joel Chikapa Phiri, chairperson of Known Associates, stated that this film is likely one of the most significant ones produced in South Africa over the past three decades. We’re thrilled about it and have many collaborators eager to work alongside us.

In the words of Owen Gleiberman from EbMaster, “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found” is a profound exploration of the celebrated photographer Ernest Cole. This documentary follows his professional journey, which started in the late 1950s when he began capturing everyday life under apartheid. After escaping the oppressive apartheid regime, he made it to New York City in 1966, where he released his revolutionary book “House of Bondage,” an eye-opening depiction of life under South Africa’s racist system.

Although the book turned Cole into a renowned figure in photography, he found it challenging to adjust to life as an exile in New York. The movie, which includes narration by LaKeith Stanfield from words written by Cole, premiered last year at the Cannes Film Festival. It tied for the L’Oeil d’Or prize for best documentary with Ayman El Amir and Nada Riyadh’s “The Brink of Dreams” during the festival.

In addition to launching the movie in Africa’s cinemas, Phiri mentioned that Known Associates is looking into Transactional Video On Demand (TVOD) services to make the film accessible for schools and universities throughout the continent. This week, Peck will conduct a masterclass at JBX, a three-day industry gathering taking place in Johannesburg alongside the Joburg Film Festival. Furthermore, Peck will participate in a round-table discussion with notable South African scholars on March 13 at Wits University in Johannesburg.

In conversation with EbMaster in Johannesburg, Phiri disclosed their intention for a fall U.S. theatrical debut of “Hunting Jessica Brok,” an action thriller helmed by Alistair Orr and produced by Known Associates. This will be the company’s inaugural U.S. theatrical release. Phiri also revealed that Known Associates aims to distribute around five to six films in American cinemas annually, as part of their strategic plan.

The company is teaming up with South Africa’s eMedia, owner of pay-TV broadcaster eTV and eVOD streaming service, to establish a U.S. platform. This platform will carry content from Known Associates Entertainment, eVOD, and eTV. In the future, Known Associates plans to generate content tailored for this platform, with hopes of launching it within the next year.

The Joburg Film Festival runs March 11 – 16.
