Some Monster Hunter Wilds players are skipping the endgame weapon grind because they just freaking hate how they look

Monster Hunter Rise’s campaign serves as a prolonged learning experience, offering fun along the way, but when delving into the latter stages, it seems like I’m barely scratching the surface of the intricate gear-grinding aspect before reaching the endgame. However, it’s important to note that an endgame does exist – in the form of Artian Weapons. Interestingly, some players are opting to bypass these weapons for fashion instead.

In this game, Artian items need you to defeat tough enemies to gather parts – a common mechanic in RPGs. These items can be enhanced with random boosts that might not align with your desired stats if your luck isn’t great. Fortunately, when you dismantle these items, you get your upgrade materials back, so it’s not entirely frustrating. However, I can imagine myself trying my luck at the forge once I finish the campaign.

It seems that Monster Hunter Wilds doesn’t offer layered weapons at the moment, unlike layered armor which allows players to customize their appearance without looking like they’ve stumbled through a fantasy Hot Topic dressed in neon outfits. Unfortunately, this means that some of the Artian Weapons, which aren’t as visually appealing, might not be as customizable as the armor.

It’s possible that it’s not entirely fair – not every one of them is an eyesore; instead, they seem to lean strongly towards a distinctive steampunk, clockwork/tech style. While some of these weapons look fantastic, the importance of fashion in Monster Hunter’s endgame means that forcing players into a single aesthetic is likely to be met with resistance.

In a popular post on the game’s subreddit, one player expresses indifference towards how effective certain items are, stating they won’t use them. This post garnered over 14,000 upvotes and sparked a wave of agreement in the thread. Another user shares that these items make them yearn for a chance to customize their weapon’s appearance. Remarkably, one user commends Capcom for making the Artian weapon less efficient than end-game monster Gunlances, referring to it as a “blessing” for the Gunlance class.

Although I haven’t personally reached that point, I can verify on someone else’s behalf that the construction manuals we provide do not necessitate Artian weapons. To illustrate, consider the hammer build guide we have, which advocates using a fully-enhanced Arkveld sledgehammer instead.

In the ongoing discussion, while some still express disagreement, those who favor the Switch Axe and Artian weapons seem to be quite content. One enthusiast exclaims, “Dude, I’ve got a buzzaxe chainsaw, isn’t that awesome?” Another agrees wholeheartedly, “Yeah, I can’t wrap my head around it. Our weapons are just amazing!” It’s not just them, though. In another thread, Artian weapon fans are also voicing their approval. Even they acknowledge that layered weapons could address the issue at hand without any drawbacks.

To put it simply, it seems to me that not all these weapons are created equally. Despite finding the Switch Axe’s buzzsaw appealing and having a soft spot for the quirky clockwork hilt on the Charge Blade, as a developing Dual Blades enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder where my favorite weapon has gone.

These items resemble hardened pool noodles with batteries attached to one end, yet their intended use remains a mystery to me. They appear to emit sparks rather than electricity, but without dripping anything. In an upcoming update, I hope armor or weapons with multiple layers will be introduced to rescue me from this fashion nightmare. Alternatively, I may opt for a high-level weapon and bypass the grinding process altogether.
