‘Moana’ Trial Ends in Win for Disney as Company Is Cleared of Copyright Infringement

On Monday, a jury ruled in favor of Disney during a copyright case regarding “Moana”. The decision dismissed a claim of copyright infringement filed against the company by a screenwriter.

In 2020, Buck Woodall brought a lawsuit claiming that the Disney movie “Moana” was derived from his work titled “Bucky the Wave Warrior.

Following a two-week-long trial in a federal court in Los Angeles, the jury of eight individuals reached a consensus that Disney did not possess the 2011 screenplay or any previous drafts. The jury needed only about three hours to come to their decision.

Since the court decided that the filmmakers hadn’t seen the script, they weren’t required to debate if our movies were alike. (As a movie enthusiast)

In New Mexico, Woodall asserted that there were several resemblances between his project and the 2016 film “Moana.” He suggested that both stories revolve around teenagers disobeying parental instructions to embark on perilous journeys in order to rescue a Polynesian island. Additionally, he pointed out other correspondences such as navigation by stars, a demigod with tattoos, and surviving a sea storm.

In 2004, Woodall claimed he presented his project idea to his sister-in-law’s step-relative who worked at a live-action production company on the Disney lot. Later on, this relative enquired if Walt Disney Animation Studios would consider a submission, but was informed they wouldn’t, as stated in court documents.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d say it goes something like this: “I personally believe Disney defended ‘Moana’ by stating they developed it independently years after the fact, with no proof that any of our filmmakers had seen Woodall’s work. Legal experts also pointed out numerous discrepancies between the two productions.

Bucky is Caucasian and hails from the continental United States, contrasting with Moana who is indigenous to a fictional island called Motunui. Bucky exists in current times, whereas Moana lived in eras long past. Bucky is an ordinary teenager, but Moana holds the position of future chief among her people. Interestingly, while Bucky desires to learn surfing, Moana strives to uphold her ancestors’ legacy as the world’s most accomplished ocean navigators.

In November, it was decided that the majority of Woodall’s allegations were time-barred due to the statute of limitations as the movie was released back in 2016. However, one claim remained valid against Buena Vista Home Entertainment, which is Disney’s DVD division, because the DVD version came out in 2017.

Disney’s legal team chose not to share any comments as they exited the courtroom. On the other hand, Woodall’s attorney expressed his disappointment and stated that they will evaluate their next steps for their client.

In January, Woodall lodged a distinct lawsuit, accusing that “Moana 2” had violated his screenplay as well. This legal matter remains unresolved at present.
