Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar portray a couple whose first date takes an unexpected turn in the Blumhouse thriller “Drop,” which debuted at Austin’s Paramount Theater on March 9 during the SXSW TV & Film Festival. However, things couldn’t have been more successful for them and the event.
At one of this year’s SXSW’s most boisterous screenings, the audience frequently erupted in applause throughout the film, which focuses on Fahy’s character Violet going on a date with Sklenar’s Henry. Throughout their date, she starts receiving ominous messages on her phone threatening to harm her son and sister. As the story unfolds, she finds herself in an unthinkable predicament: having to kill her date. The movie delves deep into drama, pushing viewers to set aside disbelief during its suspenseful climax. However, its stunning cinematography and intricate plot twists make this suspension of belief more feasible. Moreover, Fahy is featured in every scene of the film, keeping viewers captivated throughout.
The movie was created under the guidance of Christopher Landon, with production handled by Jason Blum, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Cameron Fuller.
After the screening ended, the audience burst into applause and remained seated for a Q&A session featuring Landon, Fahy, and Sklenar. During this session, when asked about the physical demands of their roles (since there appears to be an action-packed sequence involving Violet and Henry in the trailer), Fahy playfully mentioned she spent a lot of time at the gym. However, it was actually the stunt team who taught her these skills.
She shared that they looked after her exceptionally well during the experience. As it was her initial time tackling many of these tasks, she found it an incredibly enlightening period. She admitted with a chuckle that balancing outside the window while secured by a harness was quite challenging. On one particular day, she exclaimed, ‘I need to be set back on solid ground!’
Sklenar jokingly remarked that she adores the harness, finding joy in soaring around with it. Fahy swiftly retorted, ‘I’d be hard-pressed to leave this behind!’
Apart from that, she also developed an emotional bond with the character. “From the very start, I felt a deep affection for her and I thought it was incredibly touching how they intertwined her past events,” she expressed on stage. “Chris and I often discussed how remarkably fitting she is for the circumstances she’s in,” she added. “I was instantly captivated by her.
Although the movie primarily dealt with phone addiction and its consequences, neither Landon, Fahy nor Sklenar reported any change in their personal phone habits. However, Sklenar, fresh from his role in “It Ends With Us” alongside Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, admitted that their relationships with their phones have actually worsened, stating, “It’s getting progressively worse day by day.
