James Cameron Says ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Will ‘Be a Little Bit Longer’ Than ‘The Way of Water’: ‘We Had too Many Great Ideas Packed into Act One of Movie 2’

It’d be wise to opt for a big serving of popcorn, as James Cameron‘s upcoming “Avatar” movie, titled “Fire and Ash,” is expected to surpass the runtime of “The Way of Water” from 2022, which ran for three hours and twelve minutes.

During an interview with Empire, Cameron explained that they produced more content than needed for “The Way of Water,” which led them to transfer some of the story originally intended for that film into its subsequent installment, titled “Fire and Ash.

Essentially, Cameron stated that the first act of movie 2 was overflowing with excellent ideas. The film was speeding along like a high-speed train, but it wasn’t focusing enough on character development. Therefore, he suggested splitting it apart. As a result of this decision, Cameron hinted that movie 3 will end up being slightly longer than its predecessor.

At D23 in August 2024, Cameron initially unveiled the title “Fire and Ash” for a new project. He didn’t share any video footage then, but he did display some concept art. This artwork depicted colossal airships, Zoe Saldaña on a banshee as Neytiri, and a glimpse of the Na’vi tribe known as the Ash People dancing around a burning fire pit.

Cameron mentioned during the D23 presentation that you’ll encounter much more of Pandora than you’ve seen before. It’s an exhilarating journey with stunning visuals, but it also carries intense emotional weight, more so than ever before. We’re venturing into some difficult and emotionally taxing territories for all the beloved characters.

In the upcoming film “Fire and Ash,” Sam Worthington and Saldaña will once again embody their characters from the initial two “Avatar” movies. Joining them are familiar faces such as Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, and Dileep Rao.

For the series “Fire and Ash”, we’ve added two new actors: Oona Chaplin is set to portray the chief of the Ash Folk, while David Thewlis has also joined the cast.

Further details about the storyline are yet to be revealed, however, the upcoming novel “Fire and Ash” is set to continue shortly following the incidents depicted in “Way of Water.
