Approximately a month from now, spectators will gain a clearer understanding of the features that Switch 2 might offer during its unveiling at the Nintendo Direct on April 2. Since Nintendo has disclosed some technical specifications early to the Federal Communications Commission, the public has access to a handful of extra insights regarding the upcoming console.
According to The Verge, the Federal Communications Commission has disclosed some technical specifications for the Switch 2 online. Although these details are usually quite technical and filled with jargon, they suggest that the Switch 2 will include Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities. This is similar to how Nintendo’s previous console interacted with Amiibo figures to unlock additional in-game content. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) feature will be present in the right Joy-Con, as was the case with the original Switch. Whilst this isn’t definitive proof that Amiibos will work with the Switch 2, it strongly hints at their potential continued use.
According to recent FCC filings, it appears that Model 2 of the Switch will be compatible with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks, offering up to 80MHz bandwidth. This is a step up from the initial Switch’s Wi-Fi 5 capabilities, but it won’t match the speed of Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7. Furthermore, these documents also verify that Model 2 has two USB-C ports – one positioned at the top and another at the bottom – with both being capable of charging the system.
A past Japanese patent application hinted at mouse-like functions in the Joy-Cons of Nintendo’s upcoming console, Switch 2. Recently, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa indicated a need to expand “beyond gaming” to encourage interaction beyond just games and consoles. It remains unclear how this will play out for Switch 2, but we hope for further clarification soon.
