But if you prefer to enjoy the game at your leisure and need assistance solely with character recruitment, this guide should suit you best – it focuses exclusively on locating each of the characters symbolizing the 108 Stars of Destiny, along with a few extras.

Navigating Suikoden II can be tricky due to all the characters involved (108 to be exact). Having a guide by your side is useful for understanding every aspect of the game. However, if you’d rather play at your own pace and only need help with finding each character, this specific guide should work well for you as it concentrates solely on locating these 108 characters (plus a few extras).

In the game, characters can automatically become part of your adventure as the story progresses. However, others are linked to side missions, specific actions, or even the presence of another character you’ve encountered before. Some of these characters are optional, and missing out on some might be inevitable. There isn’t an in-game checklist, not even in the recent remasters, making this your best opportunity to collect all 108 characters in sequence. Here’s how you can do it!

Riou

How to Recruit: As the protagonist, he’s already there at the start of Suikoden 2, of course.

Jowy

How to Recruit: Joins automatically.

Mukumuku

Star: Chima
How to Recruit: When you get to Kyaro with Jowy, head towards Riou’s house. North of his house and a little to the East there’s a tree. Interact with the large tree three times. This has to be done before meeting Nanami.
Second Chance: If you miss Mukumuku in Kyaro, wait until after you liberate Greenhill. Then speak to NPCs in Greenhill until someone talks about a ‘red-caped squirrel’. At this point, walk the path from Greenhill to Muse repeatedly, with an empty slot in your party. This is random – but eventually, Mukumuku will fill the empty slot in your party.

Nanami

Star: Tenjyu
How to Recruit: Nanami offers to join you when you talk with her in Kyaro. If you refuse, she’ll join later automatically anyway.

Gengen

Star: Chitan
How to Recruit: Will join automatically when you return from Kyaro.

Rikimaru

Star: Chian
How to Recruit: Find him in Ryube, out cold. Talk to him and pay the 3000 potch tab for his meal at the Inn.
Second Chance: If you miss him, later on after the situation changes in Ryube, he’ll instead be in Coronet. Again, you’ll need to pay for his meal.

Millie

Star: Chiku
How to Recruit: In Ryube, talk to her and agree to help her find her pet Bonaparte in Ryube Forest. You’ll want to head East in the Forest.

Kinnison

Star: Chisin
How to Recruit: In Ryube Forest, instead of going east for Millie’s quest, take the path north. Place the bird/it’s nest back into the tree. Leave the forest – possibly to go off to do Millie’s quest – and then later return to the same screen. Explain that you helped the bird, and both Kinnison and Shiro will join you.

How to Recruit: See above for Kinnison’s recruitment; these two join as a pair.

Zamza

How to Recruit: Talk to him in Toto with Nanami in your party.
Second Chance: He can be recruited later in South Window too.

Apple

How to Recruit: Automatically joins after the grim events in Toto.

Hanna

How to Recruit: After recruiting Apple, talk to her in Toto.

Tsai

How to Recruit: He’s in Ryube Forest, but joins automatically as the story progresses.

While in Muse – Important Extra:

This is vital to a later recruitment. When you first enter Muse, go north-east and find an NPC called Elza.
Talk to her and receive two packages. When another NPC called Clive asks, say you have not seen Elza.
Finally, find Elza back at the entrance of Muse and give her the packages back.
Put a pin in this for now – but these actions line up an otherwise missable character recruitment later.

Tuta

How to Recruit: Talk to him in Muse after receiving your first assignment from Jess. He can be found walking around outside a building north of the Inn.

Anita

Star: Tenkyu
How to Recruit: Find her at the Muse Inn. You will need to talk to her several times, leaving and re-entering the town between each conversation. She’ll ask you to do things for her – you’ll need to do them, leave town, re-enter, and talk to her again. After running three errands, she’ll offer to join.

Templeton

Star: Chimou
How to Recruit: Find this returning Suikoden 1 Character at the Mercenary Fortress after receiving your first mission from Jess. You can leave this until later if you wish; Templeton will still be at the Fortress.

Gilbert

Star: Chisatsu
How to Recruit: You’ll want to save before the third major battle, as this is a difficult recruit. This is your only shot at this! When the Highland Army needs to be stalled, focus on attacking Gilbert. You need to damage his unit – if you do, he’ll switch sides.

Bolgan

How to Recruit: Joins automatically in Coronet during the escape sequence, after defeating Tai Ho.

How to Recruit: After agreeing to take Fitcher to Two River City, win 5000 Potch from Tai Ho in his game. This happens in Kuskus, at the port.

Yam Koo

Oulan

How to Recruit: Enter Kuskus with an all-female party – the hero doesn’t count towards this, obviously. Speak with the old lady near the entrance to the town, then head West over the bridge to trigger an encounter that recruits Oulan..

Richmond

Star: Chiyu
How to Recruit: Talk to him in the southern part of Radat and accept his challenge. To trigger the recruitment, lose the coin flip game to him, then head to the bar in the north of town. Talk to the guy on your left as you enter to get a ‘special coin’. Return to Richmond, and play the game again using the coin.

Yoshino Yamamoto

Star: Tenkoku
How to Recruit: Talk to her in Radat while you also have Freed Yamamoto in your current party.

Alex

Star: Chisu
How to Recruit: After events in North Window, head to South Window, and go upstairs in the Inn to find Alex and Hilda hanging out. Talk to them to have them join.

Hilda

Star: Chiin
How to Recruit: In South Window’s Inn, upstairs. Joins alongside Alex.

Adlai

Star: Chisou
How to Recruit: Adlai is in South Window. Find him north-east of the Trader’s Shop. You’ll need to obtain a Wooden Shield (purchasable from, the Armony), Wind Crystal (buy from the Rune Shop), and Sacrificial Jizo (Bolgan has one, or they’re sold by Alex at HQ). Bring the items. When you get the chance, Throw the Wind Crystal at him. He joins.

Clive

Star: Tensyo
How to Recruit: You must have spoken to Elza and completed the Package Side Quest in Must CIty earlier on, as directed under the ‘While In Muse’ heading of this guide. If you did that, you can now speak to Clive in South Window to recruit him.

Taki

Star: Chizen
How to Recruit: When you reach Lakewest Village, find Taki inside a house and talk to her three times.

Hans

Star: Chiyu
How to Recruit: Find Hans upstairs in the Two River Inn. Talk to him and allow him to open a shop in your Castle for him to join. If you let him do it for free, he joins immediately. If you ask for cash, it’ll take a while – but he will eventually join regardless.

Tetsu

Star: Chiyu
How to Recruit: You’ll need an item for this – go to Two Rivers and buy some Fried Tacos from the Kobold District there. In battle, use the Fried Tacos on a Riou until he is ‘Toasty’. Now, in Lakewest, go to a house in the north-west to find Tetsu. If you’re sufficiently toasty, Tetsu joins.

How to Recruit: One of three characters who’ll join after you repel Highland at Two River City.

Fitcher

How to Recruit: Joins automatically after you save Two River City.

Ridley Wizen

How to Recruit: Automatically joins the party after you save Two River City, alongside Chaco and Fitcher.

Stallion

Star: Tensoku
How to Recruit: Stallion can be found dashing around Radat. You must have used the Run Away or Let Go command 50 times – after which, you can challenge him to a race.

How to Recruit: After you get back from Two River, go to the north-eastern part of the castle. Talk to Hai Yo and he’ll join to be your personal cook.

How to Recruit: Find Meg on the Greenhill/Muse border, bothering guards. When she joins (see below), so does Gadget.

How to Recruit: Another returning Suikoden 1 Character, find Meg at the Greenhill/Muse border. Talk to her and she’ll join along with Gadget.

How to Recruit: Riou has to be Level 30 or higher for this one. Once you fit that requirement, talk to Wakaba in the Forest Village.

How to Recruit: Head to Lakewest’s Inn, and talk to Hix and Tengaar within. This will lead to you going to Kobold Village to help Hix, after which Talk to Hix and Tengaar in the Lakewest Inn. Then help Hix in Kobold Village.

How to Recruit: Follow the above instructions for Hix, and Tengaar will join at the same time.

How to Recruit: Viki will run into you when you’re travelling to Matilda through the Forest Path. Agree to let her stay at your “house”, by which we mean, of course, your Castle.

How to Recruit: You’ll need to complete a quest Futch shares with Humphrey. Find them at Highway Village. To trigger it, speak to Humphrey at the Inn there, stay overnight, and then help the duo out on Rakutei Mountain.

Humphrey Mintz

How to Recruit: At the Highway Village Inn, speak to Humphrey, then stay overnight. Agree to help the pair out on Rakutei Mountain, and they’ll join after you give them an assist. Futch joins as part of the bargain.

Camus

How to Recruit: Joins automatically as the story progresses through Matilda and Rockaxe.

Miklotov

How to Recruit: Joins automatically alongside Camus after Rockaxe.

Kiba Windamier

How to Recruit: Events after you return to Matilda will lead to a battle; Kiba will automatically join after that.

Badeaux

How to Recruit: Return to the Forest Path that leads to Matlida and talk to Badeaux, but make sure you have an animal-type party member in your active party – Shiro will do.

How to Recruit: Find Connell in the Forest Village and talk to him when you have a Sound Set in your inventory. One can be found in the Radat Item shop.

Ayda

How to Recruit: Once you’ve recruited Badeaux, go to the Forest Village. Fight the Griffins to save the other Griffin; then use Badeaux’s Listening Crystals to talk to the Griffin you saved. Feather will join, as will Ayda.

Feather

How to Recruit: As above for Ayda’s recruitment, defeat the Griffins in the Forest Village and then use the Listening Crystals to talk to the Griffin.

Sigfried

Star: Tenman / Tentai
How to Recruit: Hix and Tengaar must have been recruited, which if you’re following this guide, they have. Now go through the Path of the Maidens, to the large tree in the forest. You’ll need to have a ‘Pure Maiden’ in the party, and then use the Listening Crystals you got from Badeaux. For the Maiden, most young female party members count, but don’t bring Sierra.

How to Recruit: You’ll need to have a Celadon Urn in your inventory. Gregminster’s trade shop has one. With one in hand, go to the Radat Appraisal Shop and speak to Lenrante.

Simone Verdricci

How to Recruit: A Rose Brooch is required here; they can crop up in the Rare Finds shops, especially the one in Banner Village. Grab one when you see it, and then head to the Sluice Gate in Radat. Talk to him with the Brooch in your possession.

Kasumi OR Valeria

Star: Chikyu (Kasumi), Tensyo (Valeria)
How to Recruit: You’ll have to choose which of these characters from the previous game returning in Suikoden 2 gets to join you, but it’s an either/or choice – you only get one. Valeria is the better fighter, but Kasumi will allow you to get into Rokkaku earlier, which is very useful. The choice is yours, at any rate.

How to Recruit: Sheena is recruited automatically after your meeting with President Lepant.

Lorelai

Star: Chikatsu
How to Recruit: Find Lorelai in Gregminster and simply talk to her to recruit her. If Killey is with you, there’s extra dialogue to be heard.

Gordon

How to Recruit: Gordon is in the trade shop at Gregminster. You’ll need to have racked up a total of 50,000 profit from trading for him to join. Trades made prior to taking on Gordon’s challenge does count, also. Be aware that any sales made when you already have a full wallet don’t count towards anything; your actual wallet has to rise for it to count.

How to Recruit: One of two Ninjas able to be recruited in the Rokkaku, the Ninja Village. You can reach this earlier if you picked Kasumi earlier. The entrance to the village is hidden in the fourth screen of the Forest Path towards Gregminster; after climbing all the ladders up the mountain, head east while pressing into the southern tree line. Eventually there’s a hidden gap where you can pass through the trees, leading to the Ninja’s home.
Other Requirements: Castle Level 3 with Kasumi, Castle Level 4 with Valeria.

Sasuke

Star: Chikyou
How to Recruit: See above; this other ninja character is recruited when you finally access Rokkaku, which is accomplished either with Kasumi or with a Level 4 Castle.
Other Requirements: Castle Level 3 with Kasumi, Castle Level 4 with Valeria.

Bob

Star: Chikei
How to Recruit: There’s strength in numbers, and Bob wants to see ‘em. Chat with Bob in Two River City’s Kobold District when you have at least 80 recruits.

Tomo

How to Recruit: Tsai will ask you to take him to Ryube to pick up some tools. Have Tsai in your active party and do as he asks to recruit Tomo.

How to Recruit: Annallee can be found in the South Window Inn, after the events in Luca. After she leaves the Inn, follow her north-east. Speak to her and ask her to sing.

How to Recruit: Find Killey in South Window, and mention you know Alex. Return to HQ and talk to Alex. Killey appears. After this, go back to Killey in South Window again and repeatedly ask him to join until he relents.

How to Recruit: Find Karen in Kuskus Village any time after Luca Blight; agree to dance with her and she will join.

Maximillian

How to Recruit: Find Max in South Window, and agree he can join you. This happens after defeating Luca Blight.

Hoi

How to Recruit: After the Luca Blight events, find Hoi in Radat City’s pub. Talk, recruit, done.

Long Chan Chan

How to Recruit: Have Wakaba in your active party, and then go to the Inn at Crom. Long Chan Chan exits the Inn; follow them to behind the item shop and talk.

How to Recruit: You will once again need Badeaux’s Listening Crystals. Go to Tinto Mines and uise the Crystal in the pool of water near the entrance.

Boris Wizen

How to Recruit: Boris is actually a like-for-like replacement for Ridley. If you chose to run away with Nanami during the events in Tinto, Ridley will leave – but Boris will replace him, also taking up his star.

Pico

How to Recruit: You will need Annallee to have been recruited. Once that’s the case, find Pico in the Greenhill Inn and tell him about her.
Other Requirements: Castle Level 3

Alberto

How to Recruit: With both Annallee and Pico recruited, now find Alberto in the Tinto Armor shop. Again, mention Annallee and he will join up.
Other Requirements: Castle Level 3

Jude

How to Recruit: Find Jude in the New Leaf Academy at Greenhill, and chat. Then go to the Forest Village – a villager here has Clay. Bring the Clay back to Jude, and he’ll join.

How to Recruit: Talk to Tessai in the Kuskus Weaponsmithy; you’ll need Viktor in your active party to activate the recruitment.

Vincent

Genshu

How to Recruit: You need one character in your party with a Weapon Level of at least 14 for this to work. With that person in your party, ride the boat from Kuskus to Coronet, and speak with Genshu.

How to Recruit: Get to the end of the Cave of Wind, and then talk to him.
