Barbarian Director’s Resident Evil Reboot Movie Gets A Release Date

Initially this year, news surfaced about a fresh Resident Evil film being developed by Zach Cregger, who’s known for writing and directing the successful horror movie ‘Barbarian’. Now, following an intense competition between studios, it appears that the Resident Evil reboot will stay with Sony Pictures, the same studio that distributed the initial seven films in the series.

As a thrilled fan, I can’t contain my excitement to share that I’ve learned some exciting news about the upcoming Resident Evil film! The movie is set to hit the screens on September 18, 2026. This time around, we’ll have the visionary director, Cregger, at the helm, collaborating with Shay Hatten, a seasoned John Wick films contributor and the upcoming spin-off, Ballerina’s co-writer, on the script. Constantin Film, known for producing the six Resident Evil movies featuring Milla Jovovich and the 2021 reboot attempt, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, will take charge of production and co-financing alongside Sony’s PlayStation Productions. I can hardly wait!

Previous news from The Hollywood Reporter hinted at Warner Bros. and Netflix potentially being contenders for the upcoming reboot of Resident Evil, a move thought to signify a fresh beginning for the series. According to THR, Cregger’s Resident Evil film is considered a revitalization that will bring the title back to its horror foundations and align more closely with the original games.

Speaking to Deadline, Cregger expressed his deep enthusiasm for these games, stating that it’s a genuine privilege to be part of bringing such an incredible game to reality. On January 16, 2026, we can expect the release of Cregger’s upcoming horror movie, Weapons. While plot details are still limited, the star-studded cast includes Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, and Amy Madigan.

To meet the deadline of releasing the new Resident Evil film on September 2026, it must begin production as soon as possible, ideally by the end of this year or at the latest in early 2026. At present, there’s no news regarding casting for the movie.

This month has seen a rating for Resident Evil 5 on a new gaming platform, hinting at a potential remaster in the near future. As of yet, there’s no official announcement on this, but it’s worth noting that the Resident Evil series did recently join forces with Dead by Daylight.
