Spelunky 2 Gets Surprise PS5 Version With A Crucial Update–If You Can Take Advantage Of It

Hey there fellow gamers! Last year in 2020, I finally got my hands on the much-loved roguelike platformer, Spelunky 2, for the PlayStation 4. And let me tell you, it was a blast! But now, guess what just dropped yesterday, March 6? That’s right, the native PS5 version of this awesome game is here and I can’t wait to dive back in with all those shiny next-gen graphics and controls!

On PS5, you can play the PS4 version due to backwards compatibility, but the PS5 edition boasts a significant enhancement as highlighted by Polygon: it can run at an incredibly swift 120fps. However, this smoothness is only attainable if your display device can handle showing those extra frames. In a tough game like Spelunky 2, these additional frames could determine whether you win or lose.

In a nutshell, Spelunky 2 is priced at $20 on PlayStation Network (PSN). If you’ve previously purchased Spelunky 2 for PS4, you’ll be glad to know that you can upgrade to the PS5 version at no additional cost. Moreover, this game offers cross-play compatibility, which means players from various platforms can engage in its online multiplayer modes together.

Spelunky 2 was initially released for current-generation consoles including Xbox Series X|S, and now it’s available on PlayStation 5 as well. It’s also playable on the Nintendo Switch, but there’s no confirmation yet if a native version specifically designed for the next Nintendo console will be developed, given that the new console may have some limitations in terms of backwards compatibility.

In Spelunky 2, the story centers on Ana, the child of the original game’s hero, Guy Spelunky. Tragedy strikes when her parents disappear, prompting Ana to embark on a quest to the moon in search of them.

In our TopMob’s review of Spelunky 2, we noted that it has skillfully advanced the elements that made the first Spelunky game great. The responsive controls, clever use of procedural level design, striking visual aesthetics, and engaging stage themes are more refined and impressive than ever before in this sequel.
