Jia Zhangke Launches Distribution Venture in China

Renowned filmmaker Jia Zhangke is venturing into new territories, moving from filmmaking to establishing a distribution company that specializes in international cinema. This was confirmed by EbMaster following discussions with the director.

The renowned filmmaker behind “A Touch of Sin” and “Ash Is the Purest White,” who is also a frequent attendee at Cannes, founder of Fabula Entertainment and Xstream Pictures, has teamed up with seasoned distributor Tian Qi to establish Unknown Pleasures Pictures, a fresh venture dedicated to film acquisition and distribution.

The business aims to introduce a variety of international art films to Chinese movie theaters, thereby enriching the selection for domestic viewers. Jia has been appointed as the president of this new endeavor, with Tian Qi, founder of Hero Films, assuming the position of the general manager.

This collaboration intends to expand the variety of foreign movies available for distribution within China, where the current offerings primarily consist of a few international films alongside domestic productions and American blockbusters.

In 2017, Jia expanded his impact beyond the world of cinema with the establishment of the Pingyao International Film Festival. This event takes place in the ancient city of Pingyao and aims to connect international art house films with China’s independent film industry. The festival showcases a carefully chosen selection that spotlights rising talents and stories typically overlooked by mainstream festivals, earning it a reputation as a venue for daring storytelling. Jia’s participation has lent the festival credibility, making it a significant new player on the international film festival scene.

Jia is working in partnership with Tang Yan, the head of Hello Group, on the creation of Wings International – a financing initiative designed to assist non-Chinese films that have been fully scripted. Each year, this fund intends to finance approximately five projects, reflecting Jia’s continuous endeavors to foster cross-border collaborations and share varied narratives with a wider public.

“Unknown Pleasures” is also the name of a 2002 film by Jia.

The news about the launch of Unknown Pleasures Pictures was first reported by Deadline.
