PS5 Sells Over 100k Consoles in a Week in Japan as Monster Hunter Wilds Explodes

For the first time in a long, long time, PS5 has sold over 100k units in its native Japan.

In a staggering sale of 108,978 copies, the console primarily driven by Monster Hunter Rise (Monster Hunter Wilds being its original title) accounted for the majority of these transactions, with the physical disc version of PlayStation 5 serving as the preferred choice for most buyers.

Regarding sales figures for each variant, the PlayStation 5 was purchased by 75,070 customers, while the number of digital edition buyers came to 26,362, and only 7,546 opted for the PS5 Pro.

Capcom’s latest blockbuster, a game that sold over eight million copies worldwide within three days of its release, managed to sell 601,179 units on the PlayStation 5. It’s important to note that these figures only account for physical sales; digital sales, which are gaining traction in Japan, were not included in this count.

To provide some context, Monster Hunter: World saw a staggering 1.2 million unit sales during its debut week, significantly outperforming PlayStation 4’s 140k units sold within the same period. However, it’s important to note that the percentage of digital sales in Japan has seen a noticeable rise in recent times.

This week has been quite impressive for the PS5, with its largest physical software launch yet and hardware specifications that are hard to ignore. It’s intriguing to speculate about how long the surge from Monster Hunter will last, and what game might become its next major hit.
