The Excellent D&D Movie’s Writers Are Turning Another Game Into A Film

2023 signifies the 90th milestone for Monopoly, a beloved board game globally. For nearly twenty years, Hollywood has been striving to bring Monopoly to the big screen, but recently, progress has been made with the onboarding of the creative minds behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are finalizing agreements for penning the script of Monopoly. Yet, it seems their agreement doesn’t encompass the opportunity to direct the film as well. Previously, these two have co-written movies like Horrible Bosses, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Vacation Friends, and they have also directed films such as Vacation, Game Night, and the upcoming Apple Studios production titled Mayday.

Last year, Margot Robbie became a producer for the upcoming Monopoly film via her production company LuckyChap. For this project, LuckyChap is collaborating with Hasbro Entertainment and Lionsgate. At present, no actors have been assigned to the movie.

Transforming the classic board game Monopoly into a scripted format has proven to be a tough nut to crack for past writers and directors. In 2008, renowned director Ridley Scott was slated to direct Monopoly when the film rights were with Universal Pictures. However, after Universal halted production on the movie, Lionsgate took up the project. As recently as 2019, Monopoly was being reimagined as a Kevin Hart project, with Tim Story, director of Barbershop and Fantastic Four, set to direct. Unfortunately, this version didn’t come to fruition either.

This year saw the launch of a fresh take on the classic board game Monopoly, packed with additional content. You know, Monopoly, that iconic game we all love? Well, it’s been transformed into various video games over time. For instance, there’s Monopoly Go! for mobile devices and Ubisoft’s Monopoly on PC and modern gaming consoles. As a gamer, I can’t wait to see where this timeless game goes next!
