Currently, Neil Druckmann, the brains behind The Last of Us, recently hinted at the potential development of a third installment in this popular series during an interview with Variety. Notably, Druckmann’s studio, Naughty Dog, is renowned not only for The Last of Us but also for other successful franchises such as Uncharted, Jak and Daxter, and the upcoming Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Additionally, the second season of the TV adaptation of The Last of Us, which Druckmann and Naughty Dog are actively involved with, is soon to premiere. With so many projects under their belt, it’s impressive to see the dedication and creativity coming from this single studio.
The Last of Us creator talks about the possibility of a third game in the series
It’s clear that Naughty Dog and Druckmann have numerous projects underway. Given the unveiling of their upcoming title, “Intergalactic,” during The Game Awards, one might infer that the team is fully engaged in its development. However, a release date for this game has yet to be announced, suggesting it’s still early in the development process. Therefore, there may not be enough time left for another installment of “The Last of Us” to be added to their schedule, given the lengthy development cycles these games usually require.
During the interview with Variety that mainly discussed the upcoming premiere of season two of The Last of Us TV series, Druckmann was questioned about the possibility of a third installment in the cherished video game series. However, Druckmann seemed hesitant to discuss it, but did mention: “Perhaps the only thing I would say is don’t count on there being more of ‘The Last of Us.’ This could be it.” While this doesn’t guarantee that there won’t ever be another The Last of Us game, it’s certainly not something to get overly excited about.
Following its release in 2020, The Last of Us Part 2 stirred up significant debate within the gaming community. Despite fair criticism about its narrative and choices, it’s hard to forget the divisive behavior exhibited by some gamers, tarnishing the reputation of the community as a whole. Given these events, it wouldn’t be surprising if Naughty Dog decided to take a break from that storyline for a while.
It’s plausible that the tale of The Last of Us concludes with Part 2, but we’ll just have to wait and see. I find it unlikely that Naughty Dog will share any updates about The Last of Us (perhaps only another remaster) until after their upcoming game Intergalactic has been released. If the TV series proves successful, it might prompt them to continue the story. Given that Druckmann has expressed affection for further exploring the story through the TV show, it’s possible he prefers the narrative to progress in this medium. The world of The Last of Us is intriguing and popular enough that it wouldn’t stay dormant for long. Even if they opt to tell a fresh story within this universe, it would be intriguing to see how it unfolds.
