Alex Gibney to Exec Produce Doc About College Culture Wars and Freedom of Speech (EXCLUSIVE)

Renowned filmmaker Alex Gibney has agreed to oversee the production of “Voiceless,” a full-length documentary exploring the ongoing battles in America’s cultural landscape, specifically focusing on the challenges to free speech at universities and colleges nationwide.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my anticipation for “Speechless,” a documentary masterfully directed by Ric Esther Bienstock (“Enslaved”). This enlightening film will delve into the complexities of higher education, featuring candid interviews with students, educators, and administrators from a diverse array of institutions, ranging from community colleges to the Ivy League.

The documentary promises to shed light on the intense ideological disputes, profound political schisms, and deeply emotional struggles that are moulding the destiny of education. Furthermore, it will scrutinize the current jeopardy to free speech and academic liberty on U.S. campuses, a topic of immense significance in today’s socio-political climate.

To underscore the tumultuous juncture at which academia stands, “Speechless” will incorporate hidden recordings from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion offices, chronicle a white professor’s groundbreaking legal battle against racial discrimination, depict a conservative uprising at a Florida college, and dramatize the controversial termination of a Harvard biologist’s esteemed 20-year career.

In essence, I eagerly await this insightful journey into the heart of higher education, where passionately held beliefs collide, political divisions run deep, and personal battles shape the future of our academic institutions.

According to Gibney, we find ourselves at a crucial juncture where the values of free expression and academic exploration are under threat. This documentary serves as an essential light, exposing the pressing concerns within higher education today, and provokes us to acknowledge and address the repercussions of suppressing opposing viewpoints.

On March 4th, President Trump expressed his intention to withhold federal financial aid from any educational institutions that permit “illegal demonstrations,” and suggested that instigators could face imprisonment or deportation to their countries of origin.

In these divisive times, Bienstock believes it’s crucial to scrutinize the institutions that mold our upcoming citizens and leaders. It’s simple to ridicule progressive politics or criticize conservative agendas, but the situation is actually much more complex and, from what we’ve observed, significantly more critical. With Trump in the White House and academia being a target, the future of higher education has never been more uncertain.

The production of ‘Speechless’ is underway, with support from Good Soup Productions based in Toronto, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, BBC Storyville, and The Why Foundation.”

Or, more colloquially:

“They’re making a documentary called ‘Speechless’, and it’s being funded by Good Soup Productions in Toronto, the CBC, BBC Storyville, and The Why Foundation.

Beyond just working alongside Gibney, I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Mette Hoffmann Meyer and Randi Kirshenbaum in their roles as executive producers on this upcoming film. The production duties are handled by Bienstock and Garfield L. Miller, who have previously impressed us with their work on “Percy Vs Goliath.

The documentary hasn’t been scheduled for release in the U.S. or given a distribution in America, but it will be distributed in Canada by CBC and in England by BBC Storyville.

Presently, Gibney is engaged in the creation of “Musk,” a documentary centered on Elon Musk for HBO Documentary Films, and “Knife,” a tentatively named documentary inspired by Salman Rushdie’s memoir “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder,” which was released in April.
