Neil Gaiman Says Rape Accuser Is ‘Fantasist’ and Produces Texts to Refute Claim

On Tuesday, Neil Gaiman, the author of “The Sandman”, responded to his former babysitter’s allegations, labeling her as a “fabricator of stories” and presenting WhatsApp messages that he believes contradict her accusations of sexual misconduct.

Last month, Gaiman and his former spouse, Amanda Palmer, faced a lawsuit in federal court over accusations of sexual assault and trafficking. These charges were initially brought to light by Scarlett Pavlovich in a podcast on Tortoise Media and a report published in New York Magazine.

In a sworn statement, Neil Gaiman acknowledged sharing a bath with Pavlovich and participating in consensual intimate acts, but clarified that there was no sexual intercourse involved. He vehemently dismissed the salacious claims of rape and abuse made in the lawsuit.

He stated that none of Pavlovich’s assertions hold truth. Instead, she appears to be a storyteller who invented a narrative of abuse, involving both her and Ms. Palmer.

Gaiman provides multiple exchanges between him and Pavlovich, asserting these interactions, that took place in New Zealand, were mutually agreed upon.

In a message sent in February 2022, not long after their initial intimate encounter, Pavlovich expressed his gratitude and admiration by saying, “Thank you for such a wonderful evening – wow x.

In two days, she messaged: “Feel free to let me know if you’d like me to draw a bath… My mind has been preoccupied with thoughts of you and what we might do together. I find myself quite ravenous.

A month following the allegations, Gaiman was reportedly approached by him due to claims of sexual assault and plans for a #MeToo movement against him.

I didn’t express that thought before,” she replied, explaining her distress as being connected to a sensitive topic from her past. “Yet, your message has left me stunned – you too? Rape? Later, Gaiman informed us that one of her acquaintances had been sharing allegations of abuse with his spouse, according to him.

Gaiman expressed his belief that our relationship was quite agreeable and absolutely mutual, as he put it in his message to Pavlovich.

She responded: “yes we did, and it was consensual (and wonderful)!”

In an effort to ease his concern about being perceived as a “monster”, she aimed to provide more comfort: “Things are spiraling out of control, and as I mentioned earlier, I hold nothing but affection and kindness for you. It was consensual – I’ve had to repeat this so many times.

In his statement, Gaiman expressed the opinion that Pavlovich may have been manipulated by external forces who spread a fabricated story of abuse against her will. As per the report, she approached New Zealand authorities in November 2022. The police investigation ended without any charges being filed in April 2024, according to the document.

According to Gaiman, since then, Pavlovich has embarked on a smear campaign in the media, aiming to tarnish his reputation and force him into an unfair financial agreement.

Additional women spoke up about similar claims in the podcast and New York magazine article, leading to Gaiman being removed from various projects. In January, on his personal blog, he admitted to not providing consent in sexual activities but expressed remorse for being emotionally unavailable and careless with people’s emotions and feelings.

Neil Gaiman’s legal team has requested the dismissal of a lawsuit brought forth in the U.S. District Court of Wisconsin. Their reasoning is twofold: first, they claim the accusations made are untrue; second, they assert that a U.S. court lacks the authority to handle matters pertaining to allegations originating from New Zealand.
