The most recent major installment of the iconic RPG series, Final Fantasy XVI, came out for PC in September 2024. Some players encountered technical issues such as frame rate drops on this platform. Furthermore, Square Enix used the contentious anti-piracy software called Denuvo. However, a recent update indicates that this digital rights management system is no longer part of the game.
FF16 without Denuvo?
About an hour or so back, Square Enix unveiled update 1.03. As per a developer’s note, the patch primarily addressed minor glitches. Yet, some astute players have pointed out that there seems to be more than just bug fixes. Namely, references to Denuvo, an anti-piracy software, have vanished from the Steam version of Final Fantasy XVI. This could indicate that the game no longer uses this anti-piracy tool.
Denuvo is known for being one of the toughest digital rights management systems out there. It’s tricky for unauthorized users to bypass, thereby reducing piracy significantly. This is why many developers prefer using it in their video games. However, gamers have expressed concerns about its impact on game performance. Interestingly, it has become more common for developers to use Denuvo just during the initial months after release, primarily to maximize profits at launch time. Later, the software is usually removed without much fanfare. For instance, this happened with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which suggests that Final Fantasy 16 might have followed a similar path.
Although they’ve taken out the contentious software, players remain unsatisfied due to ongoing technical issues the game continues to experience.
