I’ve gotten a sneak peek at Castle of Blackwater, an upcoming social deduction game, and let me tell you, it has piqued my interest for its official launch. It’s like Among Us mixed with magic, spirits, and ghostly encounters, with a dash of werewolf thrown in for good measure. For more details on my initial thoughts, check out the Castle of Blackwater preview below.
As an avid Among Us player, you’ll grasp the fundamental gameplay structure, but Castle of Blackwater takes it to another level with innovative additions. One aspect that really caught my attention was the high degree of character customization – apparently I’m not the only one who enjoys accessorizing with a fish! How did they read my mind?
At the start of the game, the players are secretly divided into three factions:
- Protectors – the good guys who do tasks
- Satanists – the not-so-good guys who kill
- Forgotten – just chaos, doing their own thing, completing tasks while killing off a player from each of the faction
As a dedicated fan, I must say that each faction presents a unique cast of characters, each with distinct skills and objectives. To devise the optimal strategy in the heat of the moment, it’s crucial to have a deep understanding of my character’s abilities. Each playthrough offers a fresh and unpredictable experience – no two games are ever the same!
Certain figures carry significant responsibilities and a weighty demeanor, such as the Record Keeper or the Sheriff. They ought to be investigating to uncover the identities of the suspected Satanists. Meanwhile, others like the Lumberjack must prioritize completing tasks related to the altar, regardless of personal risks, for the greater good.
During the initial match, I was assigned the role of Record Keeper, but unfortunately, I met my demise immediately. It was actually quite amusing. The team expressed their regrets, but we all ended up laughing heartily and enjoying the subsequent games.
Leroy, who serves as the Community Director at Castle of Blackwater, warmly welcomed and guided me through notable locations within the map. However, it was he who tricked me into eliminating a fellow Protector, thus securing a victory for the Satanists. Regrettably, I’m prone to succumbing to group influence.
In the time I was inactive or “dead” within the game, I had the opportunity to savor an extraordinary aspect: the Dead Ghost Experience. Contrary to what one might think, dying doesn’t mean the end; instead, you continue to influence the game.
As a gamer, I roam around as a ghostly figure, gathering spectral essences from fallen comrades. These essences can be traded at the in-game store for an array of goodies – from blocks that bolster the enemy team’s defenses, to buffs that boost my own squad, and even the ability to send messages or cast votes. The most effective strategy is to collaborate with other spectral players (whom I can communicate with through voice chat) and pool all our essences to a single entity for shopping purposes.
At the close of each evening, you’ll have an opportunity to cast your vote for who you believe is the individual secretly practicing Satanism. This is your moment to either present compelling evidence or engage in manipulation of other players, if that’s your preferred approach. After you’ve placed your vote on a player, they will then be given a chance to respond and defend themselves. I suggest extending the defense period slightly for fairness, but overall it remains an engaging experience.
The Castle of Blackwater boasts an extensive map, filled with numerous challenges (or seemingly challenging activities). Navigating through the castle can seem rather perplexing until one becomes familiar with its structure and hidden passageways.
When you glance at the Altar, you’ll notice that the chores are categorized as Easy, Medium, and Hard. I found pleasure in the assortment of mini games I engaged with, such as cooking and tidying up. However, if questioned, I can confidently claim that I successfully completed the Beer Pour task in a single attempt (admittedly, it took me several attempts more than once).
All in all, I found Blackwater Castle just as thrilling as experiencing Among Us for the first time. It’s a game that combines challenges and suspense in an enjoyable way, often leading to hilarious situations. I can’t wait to invite my friends to join me once it launches on March 25th.
