This year, I found myself among the many who defied expectations when it comes to watching the Oscars. Despite a slight dip in viewership overall, the show managed to draw in 3% more viewers, reaching a 3.92 rating among adults aged 18-49 – the highest it’s been for this group in two years. It also saw an impressive 3.17 rating increase among younger adults (ages 18-34), marking its best performance in five years for that demographic. This season, it turned out to be the most watched awards show. As for why the Oscars are resonating with millennials and Gen Z this year, it’s hard to pinpoint just one reason. Could it be Timothée Chalamet’s charm? The excitement surrounding Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performances? Or perhaps it was the entertaining hosting by Conan O’Brien that did the trick. While we can’t say for certain what caused the ratings surge, one possibility is that Hulu’s streaming option made the show more accessible to people who usually don’t have cable subscriptions – even if the stream cut out right before the biggest award of the night!
