John Oliver expressed his opinion about the confrontation between Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday, stating that the entire event was extremely unpleasant.
In the broadcasted gathering, Trump criticized Zelenskyy as being disrespectful for refusing to negotiate a peace agreement with Russia on Trump’s conditions. Vice President JD Vance additionally advised Zelenskyy to express gratitude towards Trump for his endeavors, questioning him: “Hasn’t there been a single ‘thank you’ uttered throughout this entire meeting?
Even though the discussion veered unexpectedly, Trump, drawing on his experience from reality TV, admitted, “This will make for fantastic television. Let me tell you that.
But, according to Oliver, “that depends.”
The host commented on a recent episode of ‘Last Week Tonight’ that watching the president criticize an ally for resisting conquest while his vice president seems to be attempting to kiss up to him from another couch, is not enjoyable television. However, he suggested it might feel like smashing your TV with a hammer until the pain subsides, but reasonable people may have different opinions.
Oliver went on saying, “The entire scene was disheartening. The Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. appeared distraught with her hands covering her face, Marco Rubio seemed to be making an effort to disappear into the couch, and it’s worth noting that Zelenskyy has thanked the Americans and the U.S. at least 33 times, which seems excessive. He shouldn’t be repeatedly prompted to express gratitude – he’s a president in the midst of a war, not a child unwrapping a gift from Grandma.
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude on X on Saturday through social media. He wrote, “We are deeply appreciative of the United States’ assistance. I am thankful to President Trump and both parties in Congress for their joint support. The Ukrainian people have long valued this aid, especially during these past three years of intense invasion.
During a post-discussion interview, Trump expressed that Zelenskyy should mention “I aim for peace,” also stating that he’s not obligated to speak negatively about Putin or other related matters.
To that comment, Oliver replied: “Indeed, what positive remarks can be found regarding Putin in relation to Zelenskyy, other than the fact that he’s allegedly responsible for the deaths of countless individuals and inflicted immense damage upon his nation? Isn’t there something commendable about him that we could mention?
As I displayed images of Putin in the background, I humorously remarked, “You know, he’s got these chubby cheeks that look just like a pair of plump Hawaiian rolls. And honestly, this horse didn’t just magically expire after that photoshoot. Being kind isn’t rocket science.
“Last Week Tonight” is available to stream on Max.
