Despite being nominated across several categories, Wicked took home only two Academy Awards last night, and it’s quite clear why this occurred.
2024 saw the blockbuster success of the movie “Wicked,” as its musical adaptation raked in an unprecedented $729 million at the box office, having been made on a budget of approximately $150 million.
The movie received nominations for ten Academy Awards, among them being Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba Thropp, and Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande’s performance as Galinda Upland.
However, the film only won in two categories – Best Costume Design and Best Production Design – a pattern that aligns with the usual traditions of the Oscars.
Wicked: Part 2 is the reason for Wicked’s losses

The first part of Wicked was not successful in various areas as the second installment of this fantasy duology is soon to be released, which is expected to garner recognition for both films.
It’s plausible that Academy voters are anticipating the grand finale, as they often appreciate wrapping up sagas since the climactic parts are typically the most thrilling.
A prime illustration of this is the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The initial film, “The Fellowship of the Ring,” received a total of 13 Oscar nominations and took home four awards in the technical categories. Subsequently, its sequel, “The Two Towers,” was nominated for six Oscars and received two, both also in the technical fields.
In contrast to previous installments, The Return of the King stood out as it garnered an impressive 11 Oscar nominations and swept every single one, winning in categories like Best Picture and Best Director. These accolades were not just for the film itself, but also a tribute to Peter Jackson’s collective work across all three movies.

It’s not unexpected that the sequel to the Wicked movies might replicate those tech awards’ success. While Part 1 was victorious in technical categories, Part 2 – named “Wicked: For Good” – could exceed expectations, as Erivo and Grande are strong contenders for acting awards, and Jon M. Chu is likely to be nominated, and possibly win, for his directing work.
If The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King-like Best Picture victory isn’t entirely impossible for Part 2, considering it delivers a flawless ending, it’s worth noting that the Academy is consistently drawn to epic, audience-favorite films that dominate in their respective categories.
