Following her win at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress, Emilia Pérez’s star, Zoe Saldaña, addressed criticisms about the movie’s depiction of Mexico, in response to a journalist stating that it was painful for Mexicans.
Initially, I want to express my deep apologies for any offense caused to many Mexicans. That was absolutely not our intention; we spoke from a place of love and affection. To clarify, the essence of this movie for us wasn’t Mexico but rather friendship and camaraderie among four women.
She added, “These women might’ve originated from Russia, the Dominican Republic, Detroit, Israel, or Gaza. Yet, they represent universal women who face daily struggles against systemic suppression and seek their true voices. I remain firm in this belief, but I am also eager to engage in heartfelt discussions with my fellow Mexicans about how ‘Emilia Pérez’ could have been improved. I encourage such dialogue.
Previously, during her acceptance speech, Saldaña emphasized her family’s history as immigrants to the United States. She stated, “My grandmother arrived in this country in 1961, and I am proud to be a child of immigrant parents.” She also mentioned that she was the first American of Dominican origin to receive an Academy Award and expressed hope that she wouldn’t be the last. Furthermore, she shared that she felt especially joyous because her role allowed her to sing and speak in Spanish, and if her grandmother were present, she would be thrilled about this achievement, as it was dedicated to her.
Despite facing criticism from both the Mexican and LGBTQ+ community during awards season, “Emilia Pérez” was the frontrunner at the Oscars on Sunday night, boasting 13 nominations. Saldaña claimed victory in the supporting actress category, while the song “El Mal” triumphed for original song. However, with eleven losses across all categories, the film also tied for the record of the biggest loser in Oscar history, a title it shares with films such as “The Color Purple” and “The Power of the Dog.
At the weekend’s grand event, I had the pleasure of witnessing “Anora” taking home five trophies, among them the coveted Best Picture award. To find out who else won, you can check out the complete list of this year’s Oscar recipients right here.
