Adrien Brody Wins Oscar, Throws Out His Gum and Tells the Academy to Cut the Music So He Can Finish Speech: ‘I’ve Done This Before’

As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement as Adrien Brody clinches his second Academy Award for Best Actor, recognition earned through his exceptional portrayal in Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist.

He won the statuette over Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”), Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) and Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”). Instead of winning, he was victorious or came out on top in the competition.

As Brody stepped onto the stage to receive the trophy, he nonchalantly disposed of his chewing gum by tucking it into his palm and tossing it to his companion, Georgina Chapman. During his eloquent and drawn-out speech, the Academy signaled the end with background music.

Brody concluded, asking to switch off the music. He’s been here before, so he appreciates it. After all, he’s no stranger to such events, yet he promises to keep it short.”

This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler and more conversational language.

To start off, Brody acknowledged his appreciation for the life and professional journey he’s been fortunate enough to have.

Or, more casually:

Kicking things off, Brody thanked everyone for the life and work opportunities he’s gotten to experience.

Brody pointed out that acting can be a delicate profession; it may appear glamorous at times, but there’s also an element of truth to that. However, he’s grateful for the opportunity to return here because it provides him with perspective. Regardless of one’s career stage or achievements, everything can vanish. This night stands out due to the recognition of this fact and the appreciation he feels for continuing to do work he loves.

In 2003, Brody was the record-breaking, youngest recipient of the award at the age of 29, for his leading performance in “The Pianist.” If Chalamet had won, he would have shattered Brody’s record by just over eight months.

Brody is among a select group of actors who have been honored with two Academy Awards for Best Actor: Spencer Tracy, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, Dustin Hoffman, Gary Cooper, Tom Hanks, Fredric March, Sean Penn, and Anthony Hopkins. Daniel Day-Lewis is the unique individual to receive three Best Actor awards.

In “The Brutalist,” an approximately $10 million production spanning three-and-a-half hours, Brody portrays the fictional character and Holocaust survivor László Tóth, who flees Hungary to reach the United States. Following a turn of events, he takes on a challenging assignment from a wealthy entrepreneur in Pennsylvania while waiting for his wife and niece to arrive.

The film titled “The Brutalist,” distributed by A24, has garnered a total of 10 Oscar nominations. These categories include the highly coveted Best Picture, as well as recognition for Best Director (Corbet), Best Supporting Actors Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Score.
