Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Did Dueling Dorothys to Open the Oscars

On March 2nd, some of the most talented individuals in the entertainment industry donned their most elegant attire and assembled at the Dolby Theatre for a significant event in the world of show business: Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo performing “Defying Gravity” together onstage for the first time. This extraordinary moment occurred during the 97th Academy Awards, which began with an entertaining Musical Dorothy Gale Face-off. Ariana Grande chose a shimmering red dress that resembled Dorothy’s ruby slippers and belted out one of the most recognizable songs in cinematic history, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Following her performance, Cynthia Erivo graced the stage, delivering an impactful rendition of “Home” from The Wiz, a song that wonderfully showcased Erivo’s vocal talents.

These two numbers, along with nearly a century of cinema history, were building up towards “Defying Gravity” from Wicked: Part One. They harmonized beautifully before Grande moved aside for Erivo to unleash her battle cry. You’d think this was the musical peak of the event… but hold on! Conan O’Brien’s “I Won’t Waste Time” song is yet to come. I can only imagine Dr. Dillamond attempting to play that piano, with those hooves clopping around.
