Every Single Thing That Happens at the 2025 Oscars

Year after year, the Oscars approach with a feeling of weariness, given the lengthy awards season that precedes it. This time around, the race has been particularly unpredictable, thanks to a controversial frontrunner, questionable tweets from its leading actress, rescheduled precursor awards and voting periods due to L.A.’s devastating wildfires, and a musical number from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande based on Wicked. As for what Doja Cat, Lisa, and Raye might do, only time will tell! But we’re ready: Conan O’Brien is hosting this year, and June Squibb is among the attendees. We’ll be here to cover every presenter duo, unexpected victories, and amusing or poignant acceptance speeches. So, grab another cup of coffee and join us in the excitement! —Joe Reid

Emma Stone looks more like an Oscar winner this year

contrastingly to my surprise last year when I donned an eccentric Louis Vuitton ensemble that threatened to burst at any moment – a choice that ultimately earned me the Best Actress accolade for “Poor Things” – this year, I find myself bracing for the presentation of the Best Actor award. It was unexpected last year, as all were anticipating Lily Gladstone’s victory for “Killers of the Flower Moon”, and it feels a bit disheartening to be stepping into the limelight once more. Alas!

The first GlamBOTs are hitting the feed

In a different wording, it would be: I’d prefer seeing more pairs of Elle Fanning, Ethan Slater, Matt, and Bowen perform together if we have to watch them. For instance, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin, Brady Corbet and Sean Baker could make a great team for the GlamBOT.

Happy 11th Oscar anniversary, Ellen’s Cursed Group Photo!

2014-03-02 is a date that Oscar history will long remember as infamous. Ellen DeGeneres, in an attempt seemingly designed to daunt any future Oscar hosts, aimed to break the world record for most retweets on Twitter and enlisted ten A-list celebrities to join her in a selfie. The stars, including Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, and Lupita Nyong’o, gathered together, creating one of the Academy Awards’ most controversial keepsakes. Over time, several of these stars, including Spacey and DeGeneres herself, faced cancellations; Pitt and Jolie’s marriage dissolved in a bitter separation; Tatum, Lawrence, and others found themselves typecast or compromised by the X-Men film series; Streep was relegated to television roles; Leto’s portrayal of the Joker contributed to the demise of a wave of DC superhero films; and Bradley Cooper’s career took an increasingly bizarre turn, culminating in the production of Maestro.

In this photograph, there seems to be an eerie, haunting atmosphere: Julia Roberts’ floating head and chilling grin; Kevin Spacey startlingly appearing from what appears to be the depths of hell; Jared Leto with his single, intense gaze; Angelina Jolie hiding her own face. It’s refreshing to see Peter Nyong’o as a beacon of normalcy amidst this scene depicting the soul-consuming aspect of fame, where having A-List status seemingly dooms you to constant attendance at the bidding of a talk-show host who is notorious for her mean behavior, yet no one dares to speak against it for another six years.

Anyway, eleven years! A lot’s happened since then, huh?

Just landed in LA for non-Oscars reasons

I hopped into a taxi, provided the destination, and received an astonished response: “Hollywood? Oh my goodness!” He then mentioned, “Let me think about it,” which seemed to imply a potential scheme or unconventional approach.

Happy 81st Oscar anniversary to Casablanca

1944 marked a significant Oscar day, primarily remembered for the historic win of “Casablanca” as the Best Picture. Over the years, Oscar history has been marred by legendary films that surprisingly missed out on the Best Picture (BP) award. For instance, just two years prior to “Casablanca’s” victory, “Citizen Kane” notoriously lost to “How Green Was My Valley.” In 1956, “Around the World in 80 Days” edged out “Giant,” “The King and I,” and “The Ten Commandments” for the BP award. Similarly, “Driving Miss Daisy” was chosen over the unnominated “Do the Right Thing” in 1989. Interestingly, only half of the top ten films on the American Film Institute’s (AFI) list of all-time best American films are Best Picture winners.

1944’s victory for Casablanca wasn’t merely triumphant for director Michael Curtiz or Warner Bros., but it became a significant milestone in Oscar history. As per Inside Oscar, that year’s ceremony was the inaugural one to be held at Hollywood’s iconic Grauman’s Chinese Theater instead of being part of a banquet. Furthermore, it was the first time the Oscars were open to attendees beyond the film industry, with 200 members of the armed forces receiving passes courtesy of the Academy. Interestingly, this was also the first instance where the Academy enforced brief speeches from winners, granting each a mere 30 seconds. The event ran for approximately two hours in total.

I’m tired of Ari’s Glindacore phase

I enjoy seeing themed outfits, particularly in extended publicity campaigns with numerous photocalls. However, after a while, there are limited ways to style fairy-tale attire in one season without giving off the impression of a professional children’s party entertainer. The ruffles, puffs, and pink colors become overwhelming when faced with another round of press cycles featuring these looks! Let Ariana be free: for her own good.

It’s never been easier to stream an Oscars ceremony

As a cinephile looking back, I used to have to pay over $70 for Hulu with Live TV (or services like YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream, or cable logins) to stream the Oscars. But here’s some fantastic news! This year, the Oscars will be accessible to every Hulu subscriber, regardless of their subscription tier – even those on the affordable $9.99 Hulu with Ads plan.
