Bill Murray is coming to the defense of his long-time friend and fellow SNL alum John Belushi.
In a recent interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Murray criticized journalist Bob Woodward for his depiction of John Belushi in his 1984 biography “Wired.” According to Murray, Woodward’s portrayal was entirely inaccurate and he believes that Woodward’s sources were likely from the very edge of those who truly knew Belushi.
If he betrayed Belushi, then his actions towards Nixon would be questionable for me as well. I just can’t accept it,” Murray expressed. “He might have had two reliable sources and all, but the sources he claimed to have, if they were indeed used in the ‘Wired’ book, were so distant from Nixon’s inner circle that it was almost unethical.
Murray has a theory that Woodward’s criticism might have stemmed from feelings of envy. He noted that Woodward ranks as the third most recognized figure hailing from Wheaton, Illinois, after professional football star Red Grange and comedian John Belushi.
Murray expressed that Belushi helped launch numerous careers, and his would be among them. “Many people found refuge on John Belushi’s couch or stayed at his house rent-free until they made it in New York,” he said. “I was one of those people. Although his death was tragic, I can honestly say that he was the most outstanding stage actor I ever witnessed.
As an ardent admirer, I’d like to share a fascinating tidbit about Murray. He recounted being approached for a collaboration on a book, yet from its inception, he found it questionable. Consequently, he decided against lending his support to the project.
Murray expressed that he had no interest in it. As he anticipated, it turned out even more unfavorably than he expected. He found the title particularly chilling.
