H.E.R. has shared her thoughts on the Oscar organizers’ choice to omit live performances of this year’s Best Original Song nominees at the Academy Awards on Sunday.
If the conventional performances had occurred, the singer-songwriter would have played Diane Warren’s “Journey” from the “The Six Triple Eight” soundtrack.
H.E.R., who received the Original Song Oscar for “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah” in 2021, shared with me her sentiments during the Chanel and Charles Finch pre-Oscars dinner at the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday night. She said, “It’s a bit unusual, but I’m just grateful to be here.” Despite not being able to perform the song, she expressed that its impact will endure: “The song will continue to exist whether or not we perform it on the Oscars stage. I was a little disappointed because I enjoy those performances, not only being part of them, but everything’s alright. It’s still going to be an amazing show, I believe.
“Warren received her 16th Academy Award nomination with the term ‘Journey’. Although she hasn’t taken home the award yet, she was previously honored with an honorary Oscar by Cher in 2022.”
This version maintains the same meaning while using more natural and easy-to-understand language.
Among the nominees for this year’s original song category, I’m particularly excited about “Mi Camino,” “Emilia Pérez” performed by Selena Gomez (written by Camille & Clément Ducol), “Like a Bird,” “Sing Sing” by Abraham Alexander & Adrian Quesada, “El Mal,” another version of “Emilia Pérez” sung by Zoe Saldaña (co-written by Jacques Audiard, Camille & Clément Ducol), “Never Too Late” from the Elton John: Never Too Late performance featuring Elton John and Brandi Carlile (co-written by Brandi Carlile, Elton John, Bernie Taupin, and Andrew Watt).
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, stars of the movie ‘Wicked’, are set to kick off the Oscars with a performance. It’s also been reported that Doja Cat, Blackpink’s Lisa, and Raye will pay homage to James Bond during their performance, while Queen Latifah will take part in a tribute honoring the late Quincy Jones.
Additionally, H.E.R. mentioned that she might be collaborating with Chris Martin from Coldplay in the recording studio. “During our tour together, Chris and I have discussed writing songs, and we’ve been attempting to make it happen,” she shared. “I believe that would be quite extraordinary because I am a huge fan of Coldplay.”
She went on to express her admiration for Martin, saying, “He is an exceptional individual. He’s so warm-hearted, and he’s incredibly talented. I look up to him immensely. He truly inspires me.
